Job Description:

These roles are replacement roles within the Academy of the Great Western Hospital with a focus on Undergraduate Medical Education. As a Trust, we place high importance on staff wellbeing, you will be offered a wide variety of support to help you maintain your wellbeing and to help colleagues maintain theirs. These posts are aimed at post-foundation year doctors who wish to spend time working in a medical educational role at The Academy in Swindon working with medical students from the University of Bristol (UoB), Oxford (UoO), and Kings College London (KCL). The Clinical Teaching Fellow role is intended as a fixed-term career development opportunity, normally taken for one year prior to specialty training. The posts are fixed term for 12 months as it is designed as a fellowship position rather than a permanent service role. The posts are suitable for doctors who wish to take time out before starting higher medical training or doctors who want to take a year out of a training programme (subject to agreement by the relevant training programme director) or for doctors interested in an academic career who wish to pursue a higher degree such as an MSc or doctorate (MD). These posts are made up of an educational role (80%) delivered in the academy as well as a supernumerary clinical component in the NHS Trust (20%). Or 50% clinical and 50% educational ward-based roles as described below.

Job Responsibility:

  • Work with the Academy Undergraduate Manager and administrators, and the UC / UT's to organize the formal teaching programme and clinical placements
  • Ensure specified formal teaching sessions are appropriately timetabled and delivered
  • Maintain regular communication with the UT / UC and with each other
  • Develop and use an individual or group CTF Outlook Calendar
  • For Office Based CTF: Work 40 hrs per week 09:00 - 17:00 with one day spent in a clinical specialty
  • For Ward Based CTF: Work one or two weeks clinical/one- or two-weeks Academy and be included on the departmental rota which will include some weekends
  • Deliver educational duties in the academy environment (80% of time for office-based, 50% for ward-based)
  • Spend clinical time (20% for office-based, 50% for ward-based) working in allocated clinical specialties
  • May need to be re-allocated to other clinical areas under exceptional circumstances
