Job Description

Barnsley Hospital is looking to appoint a dynamic and highly motivated individual to the post of a Clinical Support Worker for the Day Surgery Unit. We expect the highest standards of clinical care for our patients and we are proud of our achievements regarding patient safety. You will be able to communicate effectively and adopt a practical common-sense approach to working and be able to work well under pressure. The ability to motivate your colleagues with some day surgery/theatre experience at Band 3 level is advantageous. Ideally you would be multi-skilled and have previous experience of working within a busy healthcare setting - being flexible and adaptable is crucial in our busy department. The Day Surgery Unit at Barnsley Hospital consists of 2 elective operating theatres,1 minor operations room, an admissions area, recovery and a discharge ward. We also have 1 brand new theatre based in the Alhambra Centre in Barnsley town center where we undertake local anesthetic Ophthalmology cases. Our clinical work is varied and includes, colorectal surgery, vascular surgery, trauma and orthopedics, gynecology, breast surgery, urology, ophthalmology, pediatric surgery, maxillo-facial surgery, head and neck surgery and oral surgery. Job Responsibility

  • Preparing theatres for surgery including the cleaning of theatre and recovery areas
  • Collecting and escorting patients for their surgeries
  • Maintaining appropriate patient records
  • To contribute to the delivery of patients individual care needs under the direction and supervision of a Registered Practitioner/Registered Nurse within theatre, recovery, admissions and our discharge area
  • To work flexibly as part of a team
  • Undertaking movement of patients, cleaning and general duties in accordance with the Departments requirements
  • To be conversant with all aspects of the Stores ordering system, stock levels and supply in the Theatre Department
  • To liaise between Theatres and other areas to escort patients to Theatre prior to their operation.

Requirements

  • Able to communicate well with patients and other members of staff
  • Understanding of how to work as part of a team
  • Have the courage to challenge & question appropriately
  • An understanding of the role of a Support Worker
  • An awareness of what is important to a patient
  • Functional skills in literacy and numeracy
  • The Care Certificate or working towards
  • Previous experience working and communicating with the public.

Nice to have

  • Computer skills (word processing, email, internet use)
  • Knowledge of the theatre setting and workload
  • Educated to GCSE Standard C or above (English and Maths)
  • Previous experience of working in an acute healthcare setting
  • Some day surgery/theatre experience at Band 3 level.
