Requirements

Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition, Foods and Nutrition Service or equivalent
completion of one-year dietetic internship experience or equivalent
4 years of clinical nutrition experience in a health care setting

Registered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration
Advanced certification, CNSC, CDCES, CSP or other specialist certification in specific area of practice required within 18 months of hire

Job Responsibility

Provide timely, comprehensive, evidence-based nutritional care and education to patients and families
Prepare patients and families as they transition to a new enteral nutrition requirement
Coordinate with inpatient and outpatient teams and pharmacy technicians to ensure patient success
Demonstrate advanced knowledge in area of expertise related to high-risk populations
Participate in the training of medical staff, dietetic interns and peers
Ensure best practices by regularly reviewing the literature and changing policies/practice
Available for travel to hospitals, home visits and clinics for patient assessment and education
Provide home nutrition support education
Effectively communicate nutrition plans and rationale to team members

Job Responsibility

Evaluate, interpret, monitor and document the nutritional status and nutritional needs of hospitalized patients and out patients using established standards of care and practice guidelines
Reviews, updates, and coordinates patient nutritional care and protocol implementation through on-going communication and conference participation with nursing and other interdisciplinary staff
Identify patients at nutritional risk based on established criteria and provides individual patient nutritional care
Documents relevant aspects of nutritional care for patients in accordance with departmental standards in patient medical records
Obtains the patient’s weight, height, and body compositions measurements (when applicable)
Identify and provide age-specific nutrition counseling to meet the cultural needs of the patients and their families
Educates patients through individual discussions, group classes, and community speaking engagements
Plans, develops, and conducts formal and informal educational programs in nutrition and diet therapy as well as functions as a nutritional resource physicians, nursing, students, and other healthcare professionals
Precept dietetic interns and provide on the job training for newly hired clinical staff
Guides the Medical Nutrition Therapy Team through education, demonstration, and observation of the Diet Technicians
