The role is responsible for providing a service which optimises quality and continuity of care for patients/clients, providing an informed resource for nurses, doctors and other allied health professionals, and providing a programme of education and training for multi-disciplinary staff that benefits patients/clients. The position requires a strategic approach to the development of services and structures, embracing continuous quality improvement and the management of changes necessary to achieve organisational objectives.
Job Responsibility:
Provide a service which optimises quality and continuity of care for patients/clients
Provide an informed resource for nurses, doctors and other allied health professionals
Provide a programme of education and training for multi-disciplinary staff
Advise and treat all patients requiring palliative care
Educate patients and their carer’s, nursing and allied health professional colleagues regarding palliative care
Act as an expert in providing information and assistance to nursing and allied health colleagues
Monitor and critique current nursing research in relation to oncology care and lead in the initiation and implementation of best practice
Act as a specialist palliative care resource for patients with advanced disease and their families
Be responsible for own caseload of patients
Act as a patient advocate within the multi-disciplinary team
Provide a supportive counselling service for patients
Refer patients and families to specialist palliative care teams
Participate actively in the development and strategic planning of the palliative care service
Maintain clear and accurate records
Promote a safe clinical environment
Act as a role model in the clinical area
Identify the palliative care education and training needs of staff
Liaise with the relevant education departments and participate in teaching
Attend study days and conferences
Keep abreast of new developments in palliative care
Promote and disseminate palliative care research
Act as a nursing research resource
Initiate and participate in research projects
Ensure compliance with all relevant guidelines, policies, procedures and legislation
Encourage continuous review and evaluation of policies
Promote a culture of continuous quality improvement
Set and monitor core objectives, standards and key performance indicators
Lead out on the requirements of the hospitals accreditation process
Participate fully in the requirement of the hospital’s risk management programme
Promote the delivery of a high standard of care
Work with members of the Multidisciplinary team in devising Standard Operating Procedures
Provide clinical nursing leadership in proactively addressing ethical and quality of service issues
Develop a culture of safety
Requirements:
Be registered in the general division of the Register of Nurses maintained by NMBI
Hold a Diploma in Palliative Care or equivalent qualification
Have a minimum of 3 years post registration experience in Oncology or General Nursing
