Job Description

The role is responsible for the provision of quality service in line with standards of orthopaedic and neurosurgical nursing practice. As a key member of the frontline management team, the CNM1 in St Luke’s will demonstrate managerial and leadership skills and facilitate effective communication with colleagues in the hospital. The position requires a participative approach to the development of services and structures, embracing continuous quality improvement and the management of changes necessary to achieve organisational objectives.

Job Responsibility

  • Co-ordination, assessment, planning, implementation, and review of care
  • Provide safe, comprehensive nursing care in line with the Code of Professional Conduct
  • In the absence of the CNM 2, manage the overall daily functions of the department
  • Manage own patient caseload
  • Plan specialist nursing service, innovations and developments
  • Ensure nursing care is based on the latest research findings and best practice
  • Develop close links with other healthcare facilities
  • Monitor and investigate complaints
  • Maintain nursing records
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of nursing standards, protocols and guidelines
  • Maintain professional standards in relation to confidentiality, ethics and legislation
  • Facilitate effective communication with patients, relatives, visitors and multi-disciplinary team
  • Communicate and develop effective relationships with Consultant colleagues, Clinical Nurse Managers and other hospital staff
  • Identify opportunities for the development of services
  • Ensure systems for the provision of clinical and non-clinical services are satisfactory
  • In conjunction with CNM 2 undertake an annual review of nursing services
  • Ensure all staff are familiar with the plan for management of critical incidents

Requirements

  • Registered in the general division of the Register of Nurses maintained by NMBI
  • At least five years recent relevant post-registration nursing experience (full-time or equivalent hours part-time) in an acute hospital setting
  • Minimum of two years nursing experience in surgical nursing
  • Recognised post-registration nursing course - Higher Diploma or Post Grad course, in Postgraduate qualification in a relevant nursing specialty or management and/or a willingness to undertake same
  • Hold an up to date ACLS course or a willingness to undertake same
