Job Description

The Lead Clinical Laboratory Technologist is responsible for performing, evaluating, and reporting of technical laboratory procedures on patient specimens for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Follows established procedures to ensure laboratory quality control and compliance with professional standards of practice. The Lead Technologist may perform administrative responsibilities of the laboratory section assuming additional technical or non-technical responsibilities, as needed.

Job Responsibility

  • Performing, evaluating, and reporting of technical laboratory procedures on patient specimens for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease
  • Following established procedures to ensure laboratory quality control and compliance with professional standards of practice
  • May perform administrative responsibilities of the laboratory section assuming additional technical or non-technical responsibilities
  • Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control, ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, quality standards, compliance activities, and policies and procedures
  • Provides input in the evaluation of team members performance
  • Assists with ongoing compliance and regulatory requirements
  • May assess competency of team members
  • Reports test results in a timely manner according to established laboratory protocols
  • May serve as lead of a laboratory section
  • Effectively manages resources such as productivity, supplies, instruments and equipment
  • Plans work and completes job responsibilities in an efficient and productive manner
  • Assists with coordinating services, prioritizing assignments and workflow, and promoting situational decision making/problem solving
  • Trains, instructs and observes student technologists and new or current employees
  • Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures
  • May serve as Laboratory Safety and/or Quality Officer

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in Clinical Laboratory, Chemical, or Biological Science (Required)
  • Clinical Lab Supervisor License (SU LICENSE) - State of Florida (FL)
  • Clinical Lab Technologist License (TN LICENSE) - State of Florida (FL)
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist
  • Associates degree with seven (7) years or more of experience in lieu of a Bachelor degree
  • Experience in Hospital Laboratory and information technology highly preferred

  • Performs clinical laboratory tests proficiently in the department under general supervision, and exercises independent judgment in the specialty assigned
  • Follows the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintains accurate and complete records of all testing performed on-site
  • Maintains records that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens
  • Determines the acceptability of specimens for testing, prepares clinical specimens for testing and identifies specimen related problems according to established SOP guidelines
  • Analyzes specimens using approved testing procedures
  • Reviews, releases test results and follows department’s procedure in reporting STATS or Critical results to the interpreting physician per department SOP
  • Performs and documents Quality Control on reagents, equipment and assays. Recognizes and acts on QC failures by consultation or follow-up with the department Supervisor or Lead technologist regarding courses of action taken to achieve resolution
  • Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications
  • Prepare stock solutions, reagents and cocktails used in the laboratory as per established SOP’s. Tests and evaluates them based on standard criteria and documents all observed results
