An outstanding opportunity has arisen for an accomplished and visionary leader to join one of Australia's leading healthcare services as Clinical Director of Medicine. This role offers the chance to combine strategic leadership with hands-on clinical practice, driving the continued development of high-quality, patient-centred medical services across the region. This is a full-time, three-year fixed-term appointment with the potential for extension, underpinned by a substantive Staff Specialist position. The postholder will be responsible for shaping the clinical direction of medical services, inspiring teams, and ensuring excellence in patient outcomes, education, and service innovation.
Job Responsibility:
Provide strategic leadership and direction to the Department of Medicine, fostering a culture of clinical excellence, accountability, and innovation
Lead the planning, development, and delivery of high-quality, evidence-based medical services across the region
Drive service improvement initiatives and ensure alignment with national quality and safety standards
Promote multidisciplinary teamwork and effective communication across all service areas
Support workforce planning, recruitment, and retention strategies to maintain a sustainable and skilled medical workforce
Maintain clinical responsibilities in general medicine and relevant subspecialty areas, including inpatient, outpatient, and on-call duties
Deliver safe, effective, and compassionate care, ensuring that patient outcomes meet or exceed expected standards
Advocate for patient-focused care and best practice in clinical decision-making
Support outreach and regional service delivery as part of an integrated healthcare model
Lead and promote a culture of clinical governance, safety, and continuous improvement
Oversee quality and risk management processes, including audit, incident review, and root cause analysis
Support the implementation of policies, guidelines, and best practice standards across the department
Contribute to compliance with National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) standards and accreditation frameworks
Champion teaching, supervision, and mentorship of medical trainees, students, and allied health staff
Foster research activity and evidence-based practice within the department
Collaborate with training bodies to maintain accreditation standards for medical education programmes
Encourage professional development and continuing medical education among clinical staff
Contribute to the effective management of departmental budgets and resources
Support the development of sustainable financial strategies and ensure efficient use of allocated funding
Participate in business planning, service evaluation, and performance reporting
Requirements:
Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent
Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) or equivalent qualification
Complete registration or eligibility for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
Proven leadership experience in a senior clinical role with a track record of service improvement
Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and manage change effectively
Evidence of clinical competence across general medicine and subspecialty practice
Strong understanding of healthcare governance, quality assurance, and patient safety systems
Commitment to teaching, supervision, and professional development of junior medical staff
Excellent communication, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement skills
Nice to have:
Postgraduate qualification in Health Management, Leadership, or Education
Experience leading large-scale service development or transformation projects
Active involvement in research or innovation within clinical practice
Interest in developing regional healthcare strategies and integrated service models
