The Clinical Assistant is responsible for direct care provided to patients and for contributing to efficient operations in the patient care environment. Direct patient care activities include, but are not limited to, obtaining vital signs, meeting the comfort needs of patients, drawing and collecting blood & other samples and assisting nursing/medical staff in performing invasive procedures, such as bone marrow aspirates. Indirect patient care activities include those that support clinic operations such as ordering and stocking clinical supplies and patient education materials, cleaning patient care areas and infusion room, transporting patients and specimens as needed, and monitoring the environment of care.
Job Responsibility:
Provide direct care to patients including obtaining vital signs, meeting comfort needs, drawing and collecting blood & other samples, and assisting nursing/medical staff in performing invasive procedures such as bone marrow aspirates
Support clinic operations by ordering and stocking clinical supplies and patient education materials, cleaning patient care areas and infusion room, transporting patients and specimens, monitoring environment of care
Greet patients, families, and colleagues in a welcoming and courteous manner
Ensure proper patient identification
Obtain and record vital signs, pain screens, weights and heights into medical record (Epic)
Report changes or abnormalities in vital signs and patient conditions
Obtain specimens (urine, stool, sputum) and ensure accurate labeling
Perform phlebotomy and EKG as applicable
Precept with specific training
Assist with unit specific procedural needs
Transport patients, medical records, specimens, blood components, equipment and supplies
Ensure all patients on schedule are accounted for and communicate wait times
Assist with research specific patient data entry as applicable
Assure clinical areas have adequate stock of medical supplies, equipment, and forms
Manage room assignments to maintain patient flow
Assist with medical record preparation
Clean and maintain equipment and patient care environment
Manage hazards of biomedical waste and chemotherapy waste
Maintain working knowledge of current computer systems
Utilize Epic for infection control precautions
Use telephone/pager systems
Provide proactive instruction and time expectations to patient and family
Communicate patient and family status difficulties to appropriate staff
Work with leadership to determine repair needs
Attend mandatory training and education
Accept additional responsibilities
Recognize and respond to emergency situations
Monitor environment of care for patient safety
Requirements:
High school diploma or GED
college coursework preferred
accredited Medical Assistant Program completion or 1 year of experience in a clinical role such as Medical Assistant, Clinical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, or similar
Nursing students with at least 2 completed clinical rotations in an accredited bachelor’s program may be considered
Phlebotomy certification may be preferred depending on location
2 years of equivalent experience in a medical setting required
