A boutique civil litigation firm based in the San Francisco Bay Area is seeking a Civil Litigation Associate Attorney to provide immediate contract-based support while the firm evaluates long-term staffing needs. This role is designed for an attorney who can step in and handle the full case lifecycle, working closely with partners on active matters across civil litigation, with construction experience viewed as a plus but not a requirement. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in California civil litigation, including discovery, motion practice, and deposition preparation, and will be comfortable managing matters independently with appropriate oversight. This is an excellent opportunity for a mid-level civil litigation attorney to step into a hands-on, substantive role with a respected boutique firm, offering the flexibility of an hourly engagement with the potential for longer-term placement based on mutual fit.
Job Responsibility:
Manage civil litigation matters through the full case lifecycle, from pleadings through resolution
Draft pleadings, discovery responses, motions, briefs, and other substantive litigation filings
Prepare for and participate in depositions, including deposition outlines and witness preparation
Review and analyze documents in support of discovery and case strategy
Assist with mediation preparation and settlement strategy
Conduct legal research and prepare written analyses and memoranda
Support trial preparation, including organizing exhibits and coordinating with trial teams
Work collaboratively with partners while maintaining responsibility for assigned matters
Requirements:
3–7+ years of civil litigation experience as a practicing attorney (flexible for the right candidate)
Active California Bar admission, in good standing
Strong experience with discovery, motion practice, and deposition preparation
Experience handling matters independently with limited supervision
Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills
Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple matters and deadlines
Comfortable working in a fast-paced boutique firm environment
Nice to have:
Construction or commercial litigation experience
What we offer:
medical, vision, dental, and life and disability insurance
