Job Description:

Summary: The City Auditor is the chief accounting officer for the city of Everett, overseeing the Auditing department and ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. Reporting to the Mayor and working with the CFO, the Auditor leads internal controls, auditing, and financial reporting to maintain fiscal integrity and transparency.

Job Responsibility:

  • Lead and oversee all accounting operations in compliance with Massachusetts laws, GAAP, and UMAS
  • Manage accounting systems, general ledgers, reconciliations, and closings
  • Oversee financial appropriations, budget updates, and reporting
  • Interpret regulations and train staff on financial procedures
  • Conduct internal audits, risk assessments, and implement controls
  • Prepare required financial reports (Schedule A, Free Cash, Tax Recap)
  • Supervise accounts payable and ensure procurement compliance
  • Monitor regulatory changes and update policies
  • Serve as liaison to auditors, agencies, and stakeholders
  • Conduct special analyses and supervise Auditor’s Office staff

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting/finance (master’s or CPA preferred)
  • Five-plus years of municipal finance experience with supervisory duties
  • Massachusetts Governmental Accountant certification (or ability to obtain)
  • Knowledge of municipal accounting, laws, auditing, & reporting
  • Proficiency in financial systems & Excel
  • Strong leadership, analytical, and communication skills
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to interpret complex laws and build effective relationships
