Job Description:

This position reports directly to the SVP/COO of UCSF Health. As a key member of executive leadership, the Chief Nurse Executive contributes to the development and implementation of major strategic goals and direction, and provides vision for all aspects of patient and quality of care issues. Ensures integration of services as appropriate across UCSF Health, and alignment with long-range objectives and strategies. Safeguards compliance with internal policies and external regulatory agencies. Ensures professional nursing standards are uniform and maintained across UCSF Health.

Job Responsibility:

  • Reports directly to the SVP/COO of UCSF Health
  • Contributes to the development and implementation of major strategic goals and direction
  • Provides vision for all aspects of patient and quality of care issues
  • Ensures integration of services as appropriate across UCSF Health
  • Safeguards compliance with internal policies and external regulatory agencies
  • Ensures professional nursing standards are uniform and maintained across UCSF Health
  • Collaborate closely with the Business Unit Presidents
  • Cultivate modern workforce alignment
  • Lead the training and education curriculum of all nursing staff
  • Manage all fiduciary obligations of nursing labor
  • Represent UCSF Health nursing internally and externally
  • Promotes and fosters a multidisciplinary approach to patient care
  • Develops programs for recruitment, retention, training and evaluation of staff
  • Provides recommendations regarding compensation and benefit programs for nursing staff
  • Facilitates organizational performance
  • Provides system leadership in the establishment and oversight credentialing/privileging policies for nurses
  • Create innovative models of nursing
  • Accountable for outcomes for patient care quality and safety
  • Directs compliance programs
  • Accountable for the design, implementation and systems for UCSF Health patient care policies and procedures
  • Assures that the Health System patient care delivery model(s), clinical and staffing standards for nursing and patient care are consistent with current research and professional standards
  • Accountable for the structures and processes that support the infrastructure for nursing and clinical research across UCSF
  • Provides strategic direction regarding centralized use of temporary services that provide nursing care
  • Participates in strategic planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical programs and services
  • Ensures appropriate nurse staffing for all services within the health system
  • Identifies and articulates the vision and strategic direction for the delivery of patient care and the discipline of Nursing
  • Ensures Magnet designation for UCSF Medical Center
  • Liaises with UCSF School of Nursing
  • Chairs the Committee on Interdisciplinary Practice
  • Serves as a member of the Chancellor’s Governance Advisory Council, Senior Leadership Council, Operations Council, Clinical Services Executive Board and other standing committees
  • Represents UCSF Health with UCSF Campus, UC System-wide and the community at large

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing and master’s degree in business, nursing, health care administration or a related field
  • Registered Nurse
  • Ten years of increasingly responsible experience in hospital management and strategic planning, preferably in an academic medical center
  • Comprehensive and thorough understanding of all elements of health care delivery, including strategy, business planning, operations and financial conditions
  • Change management skills
  • Expertise in evaluating the organization issues, initiating actions to make change, planning change with stakeholder buy-in and executing the plan
  • Collaborative leadership skills to function in a highly complex and matrixed organizational environment
  • Relationship building skills
  • Expertise in all aspects of assigned functions, as well as development and management of operational and capital budgets
  • Sets high standards of behavior, performance, quality, credibility, and integrity
  • Demonstrated understanding of the roles of teaching, research and patient care in the academic medical center
  • Ability to comply with all nurse practice and medical center policies and procedures for infection control, safety, administrative and clinical practice
  • Served in a Magnet organization or understands the principles of shared governance and interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Direct experience with Lean management and/or an understanding of the Principles of Lean process improvement
  • Licensed RN required

Nice to have:

  • Prior experience in a unionized environment is strongly preferred
  • PhD or DNP preferred
