The Chief Engineer at Soho Grand Hotel serves as the leader of the Engineering Department and is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of all building systems and infrastructure throughout the property. The Chief Engineer acts as the primary liaison between departments, ownership, and outside contractors for all engineering-related operations, capital improvements, and facility maintenance initiatives. The Chief Engineer oversees the engineering team, coordinates the completion of all preventative and reactive maintenance tasks, and ensures the hotel’s mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and life-safety systems operate reliably and in accordance with regulatory requirements. This role also manages departmental scheduling, payroll oversight, training, and disciplinary actions while fostering a collaborative and accountable team environment. The Chief Engineer must maintain strong communication with hotel leadership and operations teams, ensuring engineering priorities align with guest experience, operational efficiency, and asset preservation. The role requires proactive oversight of the building, anticipating potential issues, ensuring timely service recovery when needed, and maintaining detailed reporting on property conditions and ongoing projects.
Job Responsibility:
Oversee all engineering operations including preventative maintenance, work order completion, and infrastructure reliability
Maintain and manage the hotel preventative maintenance program and ensure completion of scheduled work orders
Inspect public spaces, back-of-house areas, and guest rooms regularly to identify maintenance priorities
Coordinate daily engineering assignments and ensure quality completion of all work
Manage engineering team scheduling, payroll oversight, and departmental staffing levels
Provide leadership, training, coaching, and performance management for engineering team members
Oversee all property maintenance including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, refrigeration, life safety systems, and building infrastructure
Supervise outside contractors and vendors performing work on property and ensure compliance with safety standards and insurance requirements
Assist with capital improvement planning, renovation projects, and infrastructure upgrades
Maintain detailed records of equipment maintenance, inspections, and regulatory documentation
Ensure compliance with FDNY, DOB, OSHA, and other applicable building and safety regulations
Maintain documentation related to fire life-safety systems, boilers, refrigeration systems, and cooling equipment
Coordinate response to building emergencies including fire alarms, water leaks, power outages, and equipment failures
Monitor utility consumption and support initiatives that improve building energy efficiency and sustainability
Manage engineering inventory, purchasing, and vendor relationships in accordance with hotel policies
Track departmental expenses and support the Director of Engineering and leadership team with budget oversight
Attend daily operations meetings and communicate building status updates to leadership
Partner with Housekeeping, Front Office, Security, and Food & Beverage teams to ensure seamless operations and guest satisfaction
Ensure engineering response to guest room issues is prompt and service focused
Maintain engineering shop organization, tools, and safety standards
Be onsite for any incident or inclement weather event as required
Requirements:
Working knowledge of electrical, refrigeration, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, pneumatic, and control systems
Experience managing engineering operations within a hotel or commercial building environment
Strong understanding of building life-safety systems and regulatory compliance requirements
Ability to lead and supervise a technical team in a fast-paced hospitality environment
Required to obtain or maintain FDNY Fire Safety Director Certification (F89)
NYC Refrigeration License preferred
Sprinkler, standpipe, and oil transfer licenses required shortly after employment
Ability to communicate effectively with hotel leadership, team members, and guests
Ability to manage multiple operational priorities and projects simultaneously
Ability to lead teams under pressure while maintaining operational standards
Ability to maintain organization, accuracy, and documentation for building systems and compliance
