Job Description

Reporting directly to the Project Manager, the Chief Engineer will lead and manage a team of engineers, works staff, and subcontractors to deliver projects to the highest standards of safety, quality, and performance. A key deliverable for the role is to ensure all works comply technically with contract documents, construction issue specifications, and drawings. Daily responsibilities include monitoring the programme, assessing risks and opportunities across design, procurement, and construction activities. The Chief Engineer will develop and implement Temporary Works proposals and maintain excellent working relationships with the client team. This role demands strong leadership, a collaborative approach, and experience delivering multi-million-pound projects in complex construction environments, with a focus on compliance with relevant building products, construction details, rules, regulations, and quality standards. The Chief Engineer will work a backshift schedule, Monday to Friday, late afternoon into the evening.

  • Risk and opportunity assessment across design, procurement, and construction

  • Knowledge of building products, construction details, and relevant regulations
  • Programme monitoring and control
  • Relevant construction and safety certifications (e.g., SMSTS, CSCS) recommended
  • Likely to hold a formal qualification in civil engineering or similar
  • High level of knowledge of applicable building regulations and quality standards
