Job Description

The town of Maynard, a MetroWest community of just under 11,000 residents with a vibrant and expanding economic base, is in search of a qualified, highly motivated, and compassionate candidate to serve as our next Chief Assessor. The position is full-time, 40 hours per week, with hours of work and days off, consistent with Town Hall hours of business, with additional monthly (evening) and annual (weekend) meeting hours as required. Responsible for professional, administrative, technical, participative, and supervisory work related to the valuation, re-valuation of all residential, industrial, and commercial real estate and personal property within the Town in accordance with Department of Revenue regulations and related Massachusetts General Laws. Provides related financial information, analysis, and consultation for the Finance Department. Provide related financial information, analysis, and consultation to the Board of Assessors for policy direction of the Assessing department and annual rate setting recommendations to the Board of Selectmen.

Job Responsibility

  • Professional, administrative, technical, participative, and supervisory work related to the valuation, re-valuation of all residential, industrial, and commercial real estate and personal property within the Town in accordance with Department of Revenue regulations and related Massachusetts General Laws
  • Provides related financial information, analysis, and consultation for the Finance Department
  • Provide related financial information, analysis, and consultation to the Board of Assessors for policy direction of the Assessing department and annual rate setting recommendations to the Board of Selectmen

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required in finance, business or another related field
  • Five years' experience in real estate, appraisal, or other related area or three years in a municipal assessing or equivalent combination of education and experience required
  • Municipal Assessing experience preferred
  • MMA Certification preferred

  • Interact with and coordinate the activities of the Real Property Division and represent the department in working with the City Attorney’s Office, the State Board of Equalization, Assessment Appeals Board, other divisions within the Assessor-Recorder Office, other City departments and the general public to resolve complex problems and issues involving real property tax and/or taxpayer complaints, often under stressful conditions
  • Responsible for the training, monitoring, evaluating, and coaching of subordinate employees engaged in the daily activities of the Real Property Division to meet all service expectations and commitments and improve performance
  • Interpret and enforce California laws, City ordinances, and regulations governing real property taxes and assessments and their applications as set forth by the California Revenue and Taxation Codes
  • Use real property assessment and appraisal systems, supervise and verify difficult and complex accounting, financial and operational records and documents pertaining to real property
  • ensure department’s standards and procedures are followed by subordinate staff: work with colleagues to revise procedures as technology and policies change
