Keyano College is currently seeking a Chair for the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) Program. This is a contract faculty position, and will report to the Associate Dean Academic Upgrading & Global Access in the School of Business, University Studies and Academic Upgrading. Chairs play a crucial role in students’ academic success and development within the program. In addition to their responsibility for delivering high-quality instruction, fostering student engagement, and contributing to the overall academic environment of the institution, Chairs undertake administrative and/or supervisory duties as assigned by the Dean or Associate Dean. The Chair will also be responsible for the delivery of learner-centered EAL classes based on a PBLA (Portfolio-Based Language Assessment) curriculum with a settlement focus. LINC classes run Monday-Thursday, with different daytime and evening schedules.
Job Responsibility:
Curriculum development
Preparation for instruction
Instruction in the classroom (this could be virtually and/or in-person)
Supervising labs/clinicals
Facilitation and review of clinical and work experience settings (where applicable)
Continuous professional development to maintain currency in one’s discipline
Incorporate teaching and learning strategies that support student academic success
Student consultation and advisement
Supervision and evaluation of students
Must comply with Human Rights Legislation as well as college policies and procedures and collective agreement obligations regarding equity, inclusion, and diversity
Peer leader in providing direction to the respective program area
Program planning in the form of administration of the development of new courses and programs, actively engaging with provincial bodies/community partners, consulting with faculty to align program goals, and preparing proposals and changes for Council consideration
Consultation regarding budget creation and variance reporting, assessing operational and capital needs with the team, monitoring expenditures, and providing budget feedback to management
Consultation on work loading of faculty and timetabling, leading program area meetings, and facilitating internal communications
Addressing student concerns, liaising with provincial bodies/community partners, ensuring policy compliance, and contributing to program success
Peer-mentoring through faculty classroom observations, student feedback and evaluations
Conducting faculty interviews with the selection committee and facilitating orientation of instructors
Facilitating program advisory committee meetings and ensure representation from diverse industry and business stakeholders, as well as related professionals
Encouraging participation of faculty in college functions, voluntary training, and professional development opportunities
Requirements:
BA with TESL/TESOL Certification or B.Ed, with experience teaching EAL learners
Strong working knowledge of MS Office applications
Strong time management and organizational skills
Nice to have:
EAL teaching experience
Working knowledge of CLB (Canadian Language Benchmarks) and Task-Based Learning
Previous experience working in a LINC program with PBLA (Portfolio-Based Language Assessment)
Previous experience working with EAL students with literacy challenges
Proficiency with online teaching platforms
