The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is a member of the interdisciplinary team who works under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and performs various services for a patient as necessary to meet the patient’s personal needs and to promote comfort. The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is responsible for observing the patient, reporting these observations to the RN and documenting observations to the RN and documenting care.

Job Responsibility

  • Provide personal care to patients, including baths, back rubs, oral hygiene, shampoos, and changing bed linens as assigned
  • Assist patients with dressing, undressing, feeding, and other daily activities as assigned
  • Take and record oral, rectal, and axillary temperatures, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure as ordered
  • Monitor and care for patients’ skin to prevent tissue breakdown over bony prominence
  • Observe and report any significant changes in the patient’s condition to the Registered Nurse
  • Assist with patient ambulation, exercise, and use of bedpans and urinals as directed by the nursing staff
  • Keep patient living areas clean and orderly and assist with light laundry needs
  • Adhere to the organization’s documentation procedures
  • Maintain high standards of personal and professional conduct
  • Ensure patient safety by using equipment properly and adhering to safety protocols
  • Participate in personal and professional growth activities
  • Be respectful of patients' and families’ environments and personal needs

Requirements

  • Currently licensed in VA as a Certified Nursing Assistant
  • High School Diploma strongly preferred
  • Self-directed with the ability to work with little direct supervision
  • Is secure with issues of death/dying
  • Provides a calm manner when in a patient’s home
  • Possesses and maintains current CPR certification

  • Under general supervision of the Assistant Director of Nursing, performs nursing assistance and personal care services for residents with physical and/or mental impairments
  • Performs the following treatment measures as directed by clinical staff: takes and records weight and vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respiration), shampoos, heat and cold therapy, and application of lotions and creams
  • performs for or assists residents with range of motion exercises
  • reports compliance with treatments to nursing staff, such as: orthotic splints, wound dressings, skin wraps, oxygen therapy, and other related treatments
  • Continually inspects and checks residents in the assigned areas to ensure comfort and safety
  • Performs routine straightening and organizing of the residents units
  • Performs effective infection control practices utilizing universal precautions in resident care
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above
