Job Description

The medical dosimetrist is responsible for the "radiation dose distributions and dose calculations" used in radiation therapy. Dosimetrists must have thorough knowledge in the areas of cancer treatment and brachytherapy. The dosimetrist helps prescribe the radiation in precise doses necessary to treat the cancer without harming healthy tissue and organs near the tumor. Designing the treatment plan for the cancer patient is a key responsibility of the dosimetrist.

  • Performs CT-Sim procedures and documents accurately
  • Executes simulations in accordance with department policies and procedures
  • Prepares room and equipment properly for each simulation and monitors patient
  • Performs complex special procedures (4D CT Respiratory Gating, HDR, TBI, SRS, SBRT, Oral and IV Contrast, Urethrogram) and monitors patient for adverse reactions
  • Manages patient scheduling in a technical area including simulations, field verifications, daily treatments, and cone-downs to avoid delays or interruptions

  • Is a main resource to radiation therapy students and/or new hires
  • Performs and acts as resource to staff assisting with complicated high risk, low frequency procedure/treatments

  • Performs calculations for the accurate delivery of the Radiation Oncologist’s prescribed dose, documents all pertinent information in the patient record, and verifies the mathematical accuracy of the calculations using a system established by the Medical Physicist
  • Assists in simulations and tumor localization using specified imaging devices, including but not limited to, CT, MRI, and PET
  • Supervises, performs, or assists in the planning and implementation of the fabrication of compensation filters, custom shields, bolus, electron cutouts, and other beam modifying devices
