Job Description
Join CSIRO and the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) to help protect Australia from plant disease risks at the border. In this CERC Postdoctoral Fellowship, you will research how seeds respond to plant pathogens by identifying microRNA signals linked to infection, supporting the development of new biosecurity diagnostics tools.
Job Responsibility
Developing and optimising molecular diagnostic methods for detecting seed‑borne plant pathogens
Applying advanced molecular biology techniques, including RNA/miRNA extraction, qPCR and next-generation sequencing
Conducting microbial pathogen infection studies in controlled environments and maintaining pathogen cultures
Validating diagnostic assays for potential adoption into Australian seed testing regimes
Ensuring biosecurity compliance, data integrity and rigorous documentation of experimental work
Requirements
A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as plant pathology, or plant molecular biology
No more than 3 years (or part time equivalent) of relevant research experience
An Australian driver’s licence
Demonstrated expertise in a broad range of molecular biology techniques relevant to the role
High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including the presentation of research outcomes at national and international conferences
A sound history of publication in peer reviewed journals and/or authorship of scientific papers, reports, grant applications or patents
A record of science innovation and creativity, including the ability & willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations
A demonstrated commitment to the health, safety, and wellbeing of staff and willingness to challenge the status quo in pursuit of Zero Harm
