Job Description

This position uses clinical knowledge and knowledge of coded data for documentation requirements to improve overall patient quality, capture severity, acuity and risk of mortality. In addition, will have expertise in understanding the clinical documentation requirements for coding of patient records using a multidisciplinary team process. Works with hospital teams to reach goals and objectives of the program which include quality, safety, data integrity and accurate reimbursement. This position functions within the Health Information Management Department and reports to the Coding Manager.

Requirements

  • H.S. Diploma,GED,or Equivalent
  • 3 Years of Experience
  • Must Obtain One of The Following Within One Year of Hire: California RN License (Preferred) - Certified Clinical Doc Spec (Preferred)
  • Certified Documentation Improvement Practitioner (Preferred)
  • Certified Coding Specialist - Licensed Vocational Nurse
  • Registered Health Info Admin - Registered Health Info Tech
  • Clinical knowledge and comprehension in anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology and medical terminology
  • Understanding of basic coding principles and reimbursement methodology
  • Possesses strong communication skills, adaptable to a wide variety of interpersonal encounters with various health care professionals
  • Strong Analytical skills when reviewing medical record documentation
  • Health Information Coding, Nursing, Case Management or Utilization review background
  • Strong Computer/PC skills essential

Nice to have

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Experience working with 3M encoder preferred
  • Understanding of ICD-9 and ICD-10 coding principles
  • Experience with working within an Electronic Medical Record environment, preferably Epic
  • Knowledge of APR DRG reimbursement system
