Job Description

Are you interested in a full-time Shelter Manager opportunity that impacts the lives of homeless cats? Gifford Cat Shelter – the first free-roam, no-kill shelter in the country – seeks a Shelter Manager to oversee the daily operation of the shelter. This role is responsible for ensuring excellent animal care, a clean and safe environment, strong volunteer management, and efficient administrative processes. This is a hands-on role that combines animal care, cleaning, leadership, organization, and problem-solving in a fast-paced environment.

Job Responsibility

  • Oversee daily shelter operations and ensure high standards of animal care
  • Administer medications and monitor cats for health or behavioral concerns
  • Clean and maintain cat rooms, litter boxes, feeding areas, and common spaces
  • Train, supervise, and support volunteers
  • Maintain accurate records using CRM and shelter management systems
  • Coordinate with adopters, fosters, veterinarians, and other stakeholders
  • Manage inventory, supplies, and facility needs
  • Respond calmly and effectively to unexpected situations and emergencies

Requirements

  • Must have a passion for cats
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in a fast-paced work environment with significant responsibility and accountability
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and stay organized under pressure
  • Strong computer skills and experience using databases, CRM systems, or similar software
  • Experience supervising, training, or directing others
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • Comfortable handling cats and administering medication (or willing to be trained)
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including cleaning, lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, and standing for extended periods
  • Gifford Cat Shelter is staffed 365 days a year
  • this is a full-time, 5 shifts per week role, one shift must be a weekend day
  • Driver’s License required
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented

  • Responsible for screening adoption applicants, matching cats to potential owners, and introducing cats to the public, while providing information regarding pet-owner responsibilities, spaying, neutering, vaccinations, and adoptions, and collecting donations and adoption fees
