Job Description:

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has an exciting opportunity for an experienced and talented Actuary, who has both an ability to excel and an excellence of character, to join our European Actuarial Team in our London office. Our culture is innovative and fast paced, and involves close partnerships with teammates in Underwriting, Claims, and Operations. The position will be a perfect fit for individuals who are intellectually curious, self-motivated, and collaborative. The role will support our UK and European portfolios, with a focus on our Casualty and Medical Malpractice portfolios. Our Casualty portfolio includes products such as Public and Products Liability, Employer’s Liability, Construction Projects, and Auto Recall for various customer sectors and is underwritten across Europe, while our Medical Malpractice portfolio is underwritten in Germany and Spain. The role may have exposure to other lines of business and global initiatives. The tasks and responsibilities will grow in line with the maturity of the business and the candidate’s profile. The role is open for candidates who are qualified as an actuary and have the right to work in the UK. Job title and compensation will be commensurate with the experience of the individual.

Job Responsibility:

  • Prioritize and drive the development of new pricing models and work closely with the global actuarial function to ensure accurate implementation
  • Carry out and deliver recalibration and enhancements of existing pricing models
  • Research and implementation of new pricing techniques
  • Price individual large insurance policies and be the business partner for underwriters in this process
  • Peer review individual policy pricings conducted by junior members of the team
  • Work with the data compilation team to ensure high quality data capture
  • Measure, track, and monitor products performance by producing product reviews to support portfolio management and underwriting strategies
  • Analyse claims and exposure data
  • Collaborate across functions and regions on the development and maintenance of actuarial pricing and reporting processes
  • Provide general pricing support to the business across 9 countries in Europe, including technical assistance on pricing models, data quality issues and so on
  • Carry out training sessions on pricing models and reporting tools across Europe on-line and in person
  • Work with Global Underwriting Officers and build close business partnership with key stakeholders

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in actuarial studies, mathematics, statistics, or a related field
  • 8 years+ of actuarial experience, with the majority in a General Insurance Pricing role
  • Fully qualified actuary with strong technical skills
  • Advanced skills in MS Excel
  • Proficiency in SQL, VBA, and either R or Python
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, capable of communicating complex concepts to a non-actuarial audience
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment as well as independently
  • Strong desire to learn from and share knowledge with teammates
What we offer:
  • A competitive package and exciting growth opportunities for career-oriented teammates
  • A dynamic, action oriented, and thoughtful environment centered on always doing the right thing for our customers, teammates, and our other stakeholders
  • A purposely non-bureaucratic organization that embraces simplicity over complexity and emphasizes individual excellence in a team framework
