The CARE Training Specialist, in consultation with the Director and members of the CARE management team, will develop a comprehensive educational plan and provide training programs on regulatory requirements, policies and procedures for the use of animals in research. Training will encompass the orientation to CARE which covers zoonoses, allergen exposure, personal hygiene, personal protective equipment, and other aspects of occupational health and safety. Education will be provided to CARE staff and the Brown research community through the development and implementation of online modules, classroom and virtual training, hands-on animal training, facility orientation, and other methods. The CARE Training Specialist will provide training in multiple environments including one-on-one training, small group training, and large group lectures. Documentation of training provided and any follow-up training that is required will be maintained.
Job Responsibility:

Maintain documentation of training provided and any follow-up training that is required
Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science or Veterinary Technology
5 years of work experience in a research animal care facility
Prior experience providing didactic and hands-on training in a research setting is highly desired
Current LAT certification with the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science
LATg and/or CVT certification strongly preferred
Knowledge of relevant federal regulations (USDA, PHS Policy) and accreditation standards (AAALAC)
Knowledge of husbandry procedures for rodents, aquatic species, livestock species, nonhuman primates and other nontraditional species (bats, reptiles, birds, amphibians)
Knowledge of handling and biomethodology techniques for commonly used laboratory animal models
Basic knowledge of animal techniques including routine husbandry, anesthesia, aseptic techniques, drug administration, recognition of normal animal behavior, and appropriate handling of laboratory animals
Knowledge and understanding of regulatory requirements for the use of animals in research
Knowledge and familiarity of Brown University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee policies is preferred
Computer skills are required including proficiency with MS Word and PowerPoint
Working knowledge of AALAS Learning Library and Traincaster preferred
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with people in a wide range of organizational roles and education levels
Demonstrated ability to succeed in a self-directed manner
Ability to train, motivate and oversee staff under potentially stressful conditions
Strong commitment to customer service
Good team building skills and ability to work with similarly dedicated persons in a team fashion within a high energy research environment
Must be able to exchange accurate information
