Under the direct supervision of the Director of the Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS), assists all HCC students through CAPS tutoring, writing, ESL, and math centers. Facilitates study groups and skills workshops on an ongoing basis. Assists HCC students in content-related material, including a review of syllabi with students to clarify assignments and expectations. Peer I may be asked to work with specialized academic programs such as Supplemental Instruction, Gateway-to-College, and Early College.
Job Responsibility:
Assists all HCC students through CAPS tutoring, writing, ESL, and math centers
Facilitates study groups and skills workshops on an ongoing basis
Assists HCC students in content-related material, including a review of syllabi with students to clarify assignments and expectations
May be asked to work with specialized academic programs such as Supplemental Instruction, Gateway-to-College, and Early College
Understand the course content and be prepared to engage students in active learning
Help students interpret the course content by breaking down complex concepts
Model or teach study skills, time management, note-taking, and test-taking
Work with students on a one-to-one or small-group basis
Understand a Student’s Learning Style and adapt the tutoring session accordingly
Help students become independent learners
Assist in record keeping
Become proficient in the software used for instruction
Help students integrate information technology within the given area
Assistive Technology Center to help students with disabilities
Be able to identify and use resources to support student learning
Attend scheduled meetings or workshops
Communicate with the instructor if needed to review tutorial services
Communicate with other resources for assistance, such as ESL staff, as well as Math and Writing Coordinators
Explore online tutoring as a resource to support student learning
Requirements:
High School Diploma or equivalency, no degree
One (1) to Two (2) semesters as a college student
Ability to work well with a diverse student population
Good communication and interpersonal skills
All candidates must have legal authorization to work in the United States
