Job Description

MATRIX is seeking Camp Managers on a rotational basis for projects across Canada in some of the most remote locations for our upcoming season. Due to the remote access to the job sites, resourcefulness will be a key aspect to the success of this role. You are team oriented, motivated, and have an acute eye for detail, accuracy, and excellent skill with prioritizing tasks. This position is fully remote, in camp. Camp location is subject to change.

Job Responsibility

  • Facilities maintenance, Mechanical operations such as generators, plumbing and electrical systems
  • Work closely with Project Managers on any client relations
  • Team player, hands-on support and overseeing staffing, i.e., working with onsite staff and head office

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge in Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing & Mechanical
  • 2-3 years as a Camp Manager in remote settings
  • Excellent and Proven abilities to manage people, and maintain professional client relationships
  • PAL license (for wildlife monitoring) - required
  • Level 1 Supervisor Ticket - required
  • Level 1 First Aid Certification or equivalent 2-day course - required
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Physically demanding job. Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs
  • Proficient computer skills. MS Office programs (Word, Outlook, Excel, Office 365)
  • Management, organizational and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Positive attitude and a desire to help your team succeed

Nice to have

  • Previous experience working in a remote camp setting
  • Previous experience working with Diesel Generators, off-road vehicles and chainsaws
  • Experience managing a crew
  • Familiar using a Satellite phone
  • Trades experience a definite asset
  • Handy and adaptable

  • Ensure all paperwork is completed in a timely and accurate manner and submitted to the Operations Department as per the required timelines
  • Daily submission of Camp Manager reports such as P&L statements, commissary paperwork, purchasing and receiving, inventory, and kitchen reports. Also update camp numbers to ensure adequate qualified employees
  • Ensure completion and accuracy of all camp-related employee paperwork including staff change forms, incident reports, performance management and evaluation forms, WCB forms (injury reporting package) and timesheets
  • Oversee the cleaning of accommodation units and equipment as per LandSea cleaning schedule and Food Safe standards
  • Facilitate safety meetings (using the Daily Toolbox Meeting form) on the 1st and 15th of each month, ensuring that all staff report accidents, safety concerns, and work hazards. Meeting minutes should be forwarded to LandSea Head Office
  • Ensure all food items are properly stored, served, and discarded as per HACCP and Food Safe standards
  • Counsel/coach employees as required and involve the Catering Recruitment team as necessary, to provide direction on disciplinary matters where appropriate
  • Oversee portioning of food items in accordance to client contract and Landsea Policies, Procedures and Best Practices to ensure food costs and product inventory are kept within budget
  • Ensure meal sheets are filled out neatly and accurately and ensure that the client and Chef sign each sheet
  • Submit client and third-party meal sheets each week including customer/client name, Camp number and location with legal land description number

  • Responsible for problem solving, navigation, supervision of ground penetrating radar (GPR) operations, analysis of GPR images, coordination of air support, supervision of ASC employees and camp visitors, cooking, communications, weather observation, cargo movement, equipment operation, repair and maintenance, trail maintenance, crew briefings, safety tailgate meetings, constant hazard assessment, route hazard mitigation, detailed record keeping, employee evaluations, end of season reporting and public presentations of traverse information.
  • Adheres to planned traverse pace and identified field tasking, within reason. Works directly with ASC and NSF management to ensure all parties are informed of current status and any changes to the schedule or tasking.
  • Ensures that all personnel operating the GPR are fully trained and following all procedures at all times. Determines if crevasses encountered on the trail are safe to cross using several methods (GPR analysis, hot water drill exploration, possibly with the use of explosives and through the use of formulas and standards provided by engineers).
  • Uses sound judgment in conducting all traverse operations in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedures, company policies, and objectives. Communicates daily progress to the Traverse Operations Manager, Science Traverse Supervisor and/or Field Operations Manager.
  • Supervises traverse staff and completes end of season evaluations for personnel. Assigns tasking and outlines priorities daily. Identifies and communicates times for starting, stopping, breaks, meals, etc. Determines operational tempo based on environmental and scheduling factors.
  • Serves as safety coordinator. Implements USAP's environmental, health and safety programs and holds regular safety meetings. Responsible for creating and maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace and that all safety related rules and regulations are adhered to. Ensures that nothing is left in the field and that any releases to the environment are remediated properly and documented accordingly.
  • Communicates all safety incidents and near misses using the ASC reporting protocols.
  • Communicates professionally with their staff to relay information needed to be successful in their jobs. This includes, but is not limited to: staff meetings, performance appraisals, job requirements, structured trainings, SOP’s, and safety practices.
  • Ensures that all facilities and equipment are maintained and operated safely, that the camp is tidy, and that waste is stored properly throughout the season. Responsible for all hazardous cargo identification, labeling, and handling prior to disposal upon return to McMurdo Station.
  • Handles confidential matters in accordance with management policy. Ensures that all paperwork is filled out with integrity and that all department metrics are met.
