Camp isn’t just for summer… and neither is this position. We’re looking for someone ready to bring the magic year-round. Nestled in the foothills of the Olympic Mountains and situated on beautiful Lost Lake between Elma and Shelton, Camp Bishop provides an excellent setting for the YMCA’s traditional overnight camping program. Our Camp offers 5 weeks of summer overnight camp- 3 for our Y and 2 for local tribal groups.
Job Responsibility:
Actively supervises and maintains a safe and enjoyable environment at camp
Directly supervises camp leadership
Provides progressive instruction in all Resident Camp Program areas
Works with Director of Camp Bishop to organize and implement camp programming
Provides a quality experience to campers and families focused on YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring
Represents the YMCA and self in a professional manner of safety and fun
Planning and Program Delivery: Oversee all areas of Camp Programming
Lead growth of off-season programming, such as weekend overnighters, Outdoor Education, etc.
Support Director of Camp Bishop with planning, hiring, and training of program staff
Coordinate and lead outreach and participant recruitment efforts, including school visits
Collaborate with leadership, program, and cabin staff to coordinate and implement overall camp program
Provide leadership to all staff and ensure the safety of campers and staff at camp
Have knowledge of applicable laws and insurance regulations. Ensure the daily activities of camp follow these regulations
Supervise Camp Leads to plan weekly programs and trainings
Provide support to Director of Camp Bishop for Camp Check-in, Check-out and all communication with parents
Serve as a role model and use positive youth development strategies in the workplace
Support end of season camp wrap up
On-site staff lead when Director of Camp Bishop is not on site or as designated by supervisor
Create a camp culture of inclusivity, positivity, and fun
Serves as direct supervisor for program staff including camp leaders, cabin staff, kitchen staff, and camp JAMS
Organize and lead staff meetings. Contribute and lead seasonal staff training with Director of Camp Bishop and camp leadership
Prepare and maintain necessary supplies, while being a good steward camp resources and budget expectations
Serve as crisis manager during emergencies
Support camp registration through outreach, parent contact, paperwork, program administration and volunteer coordination
Work collaboratively with facilities director and Camp JAMS staff to ensure the cleanliness and upkeep of camp
Be available for the entire length of the program and demonstrate a positive work ethic
Coach: Maintain weekly observations on staff performance
give staff positive and constructive feedback
communicate significant observations to direct supervisors
Participate in and help lead the Staff Training
Lead end of the season staff evaluations
Requirements:
Minimum 21 years of age
Preferred: One season or more of camp experience
Previous experience leading young adults and teens
Positive attitude and previous experience with diverse populations
Knowledge and skills in program activities and related equipment set-up, and the ability to instruct participants in age-appropriate techniques
Required: Current Small Craft Safety Certification or YMCA Lifeguard/Red Cross Lifeguard certification (or the ability to obtain these certifications during staff training)
