Job Responsibility

Enforces adopted regulatory codes and ordinances about building construction, condemnation, and demolition of buildings and structures
Assists the Building Inspector in preparing and enforcing rules and regulations
Assists in controlling construction, erection, repair, alteration, demolition, removal, and occupancy of all buildings and structures
As directed, assigns, trains, and evaluates all departmental administrative and inspection personnel
Assists in coordinating department activities with other departments, boards, and commissions
Assists in reviewing all applications, examining and approving plans and specifications

inspects premises to enforce compliance
Inspects and certifies buildings and structures in accordance with the Massachusetts State Building Code

Requirements

Two (2) years of verifiable experience as a building inspector with a public agency performing duties at a level equivalent to class 6331 Building Inspector with the City and County of San Francisco
Possession of a valid Class C California driver license
Possession of the Commercial and Residential Building Inspector certifications or the Building Plans Examiner certification, issued by the International Code Council (ICC), is required. Inspectors must maintain the certification as a condition of continued employment.

Job Responsibility

Supervises building inspectors and/or subordinate staff by assigning, monitoring, and evaluating their work
providing training to inspectors on the interpretation and application of building codes, related ordinances and laws
Reviews and revises records, reports, correspondence and plan review, such as records of inspections, daily reports, letters to members of the public, notices of violation, plan review comments and correction notices prepared by building inspectors
Interprets and explains the codes, regulations, ordinances and laws which govern building construction in the City and County of San Francisco
Ensures that information concerning the department procedures is disseminated accurately
resolve conflicts between staff/inspectors and general public (contractors/property owners) during plan review and field inspection activities
Represents the department at meetings, hearings and in court
May act as a team leader for emergency response on behalf of the department
Makes site visits and reviews plans with or without subordinate staff to check buildings and other inspections performed by staff
Observes, assists and reviews procedures utilized by staff during inspections

Requirements

At least five years experience in the supervision of building construction or design, or a two-year associate degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of knowledge and ability
Certified by the Board of Building Regulations and Standards as required
Certified by the Massachusetts Board of Building Regulations and Standards as a Local Inspector
Knowledge of Massachusetts Building and Architectural Codes
Knowledge of state plumbing, gas, electrical codes, and fire prevention laws
Knowledge of Massachusetts requirements for building construction, energy, fire prevention, light, ventilation, and safe exits

Job Responsibility
