Job Description

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Benefits Assessment Officer to join the Council on a 3-month ongoing contract. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled benefits professional to support residents through the processing of Housing Payments and Crisis Support Payments as part of the Council's CRF Scheme, while helping vulnerable households maximise their income and access available support. The Role As a Benefits Assessment Officer, you will be responsible for assessing and processing applications for financial support, ensuring residents receive timely and accurate assistance. You will also undertake follow-up work with residents to identify opportunities to maximise household income, reduce expenditure, and access additional support services where appropriate.

Job Responsibility

  • Process Housing Payments and Crisis Support Payments in line with Council policies and procedures
  • Assess applications accurately and efficiently
  • Verify supporting documentation and determine eligibility
  • Manage a caseload of applications and enquiries
  • Liaise with residents, internal departments, and external agencies
  • Conduct follow-up work to maximise residents' income and identify financial support opportunities
  • Help residents reduce household expenses by signposting relevant services and support schemes
  • Maintain accurate records and update case management systems
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, policies, and procedures.

Requirements

  • Previous experience working as a Benefits Assessment Officer, Benefits Assessor, Housing Benefits Officer, or similar role
  • Experience processing benefits, support payments, welfare assistance, or housing-related claims
  • Strong understanding of benefits administration and assessment processes
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to make accurate decisions
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to manage a busy workload and meet deadlines
  • Experience working within a local authority environment is highly desirable.
