Within the framework of the new ESA mission NewATHENA, MPE is responsible for testing the optics of the new X-ray satellite using its X-ray test facility PANTER. To meet the requirements of this mission, a new microfocus X-ray source is to be established, whose spatial and spectral properties must be determined and optimized. In addition, numerous optical measurements are to be carried out for other X-ray observatories such as eXTP and the AXIS project.
Job Responsibility:
Commissioning and characterization of a new X-ray source
Conceptual design and integration of the X-ray source into the facility control system
Preparation, execution, and documentation of measurement campaigns (optics, cameras, source), as well as support for data analysis
Responsibility for operating the X-ray test facility (vacuum system, X-ray sources, detectors, and other components)
Support of the facility’s IT infrastructure
Communication with our international project partners
Requirements:
Completed university degree in physics, engineering, or a comparable field
Experience with experimental setups, conducting measurements, and evaluating results
Experience in controlling laboratory equipment
Programming skills in common laboratory programming languages (e.g. Python)
Proficiency in English
Ability to work independently on projects as well as in a team
Nice to have:
Initial experience with vacuum technology is an advantage
Ideally, you enjoy familiarizing yourself with challenging subject areas and already have experience in similar projects
