Job Description:

Bank Staff Nurse role within the Wards department at Blackrock Clinic, the leading and longest established private hospital and clinic in Ireland. The role requires practicing within the Codes of Practice, Rules and Guidelines set out by the Nursing and Midwifery board of Ireland (NMBI) and complying with the policies and procedures of Blackrock Clinic.

Job Responsibility:

  • Assessment, Planning, Implementation and Evaluation
  • Utilising assessment skills and techniques to determine patient needs on admission
  • Documenting nursing admission assessment thoroughly and accurately
  • Continually assess patient condition
  • Clearly identify patient problems for which nursing care will be given
  • Develop and document a care plan based on patient needs and best practice
  • Update the written or computerised care plan
  • Develop appropriate and individualised patient education and discharge planning and utilise available ward resources for same
  • Collaborate with other health care team members within the defined clinical area in accordance with the patient care plan
  • Develop discharge criteria from time of admission
  • Plan work to allow time for training, meetings etc
  • Provide safe, comprehensive nursing based on current standards and research, perform procedures according to established policy and procedures
  • Administer the developed care plan in a consistent and flexible manner
  • Fulfil prescribed orders completely and accurately
  • Provide care with minimal supervision in a timely accurate and safe manner
  • Maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors and colleagues
  • Advocate as necessary for the patients, respecting their dignity and confidentiality
  • Function effectively in an emergency situation
  • Adapt to changing workloads
  • Know and practice within legal requirements including those set down by NMBI
  • Evaluate and update care plans appropriately
  • Evaluate personal nursing practice as compared to standards of care and know own ability and competence
  • Participate in quality assurance by assisting to identify recurrent nursing problems and cooperate in data collection and problem solving
  • Comply with all hospital policy’s in relation to Infection Prevention and Control
  • Promoting the safety, health, welfare and social wellbeing of patients and respect the dignity and confidentiality of patients and their families
  • Maintaining appropriate and accurate written/electronic nursing and midwifery records and care plans regarding patient care in accordance with local/national/professional guidelines
  • Taking responsibility for own competency and learning and development needs and actively contribute to the learning and development of the wider nursing and primary care team
  • Co-operating with the introduction of ICT systems, utilise and analyse the data and adopting the use of new systems in line with policies and procedures
  • Ensuring that records are protected and managed as per Blackrock Clinic’s policy and in accordance with relevant legislation
  • Working closely with colleagues across the hospital in order to provide a seamless service delivery to the patients
  • Evidence of participation in audit and evaluation of care provision including collection of quality care metrics where same are in place

  • Maintain documents according to the policies and procedures of Blackrock Clinic
  • Update documents to observe physical and emotional symptoms and changes
  • Report relevant information verbally and in writing to appropriate nursing personnel
  • Respond appropriately to patient/family requests and questions
  • Communicate appropriate with colleagues and other members of the health care team
  • Recognise self-limitations and seek assistance
  • Attend and contribute in staff meetings and team briefing
  • Communicate in a manner that avoids antagonism, reduces conflict and prevents undue anxiety

  • Participate in working groups to develop and promote quality care within Blackrock Clinic
  • Participate in the education of learners and assist with the orientation of new personnel
  • Present a professional appearance and be punctual
  • Accept responsibility for “Acting Up” in specific instances, as assigned
  • Comply with and adhere to all relevant policies and procedures

Requirements:

  • Registered in the general division of NMBI
  • Evidence of personal professional development
  • Ongoing skills training – relevant to care required for patient case load
  • Valid work permission for the Republic of Ireland (or eligible for a work permit in the case of critical skills)

  • Be responsible for the safe and effective operations of Nursing services towards ensuring patients have safe and timely access to services, expertise and support on a 24-hour basis.
  • Provide clinical leadership, support, expertise and managerial advice to all staff in the clinical area
  • Ensure that the day-to-day activities and resources of the hospital are managed and co-ordinated throughout, so that a first-class patient focused service is delivered.
  • Coordinates patient admissions, transfers, and discharges to ensure smooth and efficient patient flow throughout the hospital.
  • Be aware of all policies in relation to fire prevention, moving and handling, major emergency, waste management and risk management and implement these.
  • Promote and maintain a high standard of nursing care, to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all patients and staff and maintain an excellent hospital image at all times. Support service areas in day to day operational delivery of services and manage any professional or operation issues that required action and escalation.
  • Provide leadership and support to the nurse managers to enable and empower them to deliver high quality safe patient care and ensure agreed objectives and policies set are achieved.
  • Provide continuous improvement recommendations to the Director of Nursing & Transformation and wider executive team where necessary.
  • Develop effective workforce planning in conjunction with CNM’s. Be able to forecast trends regarding skill/case mix to ensure effective short and long term workforce planning.
  • Ensure that all nursing and support services are managed to optimise effectiveness, quality, safety and efficiency.
