Job Description:

The Ibáñez group at ISTA explores the chemistry and physics of inorganic nanomaterials, with a strong focus on designing and understanding solution-derived materials for applications such as thermoelectricity and catalysis through a multidisciplinary approach that bridges chemistry, physics, and materials science. We are currently seeking an Automation Scientist to establish and operate a state-of-the-art Chemspeed infrastructure, playing a central role in delivering the largest project currently underway at ISTA, funded by a highly prestigious WSS grant. This position presents a rare opportunity to help build a high-throughput automated research facility from the ground up, work with one of the world’s most advanced automation platforms, and grow into a role with substantial scientific responsibility, visibility, and long-term career development.

Job Responsibility:

  • Leading the implementation and commissioning of the Chemspeed automation infrastructure
  • Design and deployment of high throughput and robotic platforms
  • Overseeing equipment maintenance and inventories
  • Developing robust automated workflows with students and post
  • Programming and operating automated systems, analyzing data, and communicating results
  • Acting as an interface with ISTA Scientific Service Units
  • Train users as required

Requirements:

  • PhD in Chemistry or chemical engineering with experience in automated and high-throughput experimentation
  • Hands-on experimentalist motivated to design, build, and deploy automation tools for research
  • Experience with colloidal synthesis and solution-based process
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in parallel and prioritize effectively
  • Proficiency with software for instrument control, automation, and data analysis
  • Strong problem-solving skills and critical scientific thinking
  • Team-oriented attitude with excellent communication in English (German is a plus)
  • Strong organizational skills, reliability, and a high sense of responsibility

  • Providing technical/chemical expertise with respect to plant batch manufacturing, including with respect to quality control, and advising as to when chemical coatings batches require further technical consult
  • Conducting paint property and raw material testing, including in response to force majeures or cost pressures, and reformulating existing paint coatings products with alternate raw materials (as required)
  • Directing technical activities to support the recovery of distressed assets (i.e., paint coatings products and raw materials) that would otherwise be disposed at a loss to PPG
  • Executing technical support projects by conducting root cause investigations, trouble-shooting, and performance testing on new coatings products
