Grow your legal career in the Office of General Counsel (OGC) as an Attorney at the Department of Transportation. After an initial training period (approximately six months in office), this position offers a hybridized work schedule. The position will be headquartered at and required to work from the Hill Farms State Office Building in Madison, WI at least 2 days per week. All employees working a hybrid work schedule are generally expected to telework from within the State of Wisconsin.
Job Responsibility:
Render legal advice and provide representation to Department of Transportation primarily to department region offices responsible for highway construction and maintenance
Render legal advice and provide representation to the department’s central office on issues related to region and other activity in the performance of their job duties
Provide professional legal services to the Secretary, Deputy Secretary, Executive Assistant, Division Administrators
Collaborate with Attorney General, District Attorneys and other governmental agencies and regulatory bodies on all matters affecting the operation of the department
Requirements:
Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Wisconsin prior to the application deadline
Professional experience conducting legal research and making determinations based on legal research in the areas of real estate, utilities, highway construction and maintenance, contracts, administrative law, government grants, budgets, claims, statutory interpretation, and/or open records
Professional experience preparing formal legal documents, such as contracts, leases, pleadings, affidavits or legal briefs
Professional experience providing legal representation in the areas of real estate, utilities, construction and maintenance, contracts, administrative law, government grants, budgets, claims, statutory interpretation, and/or open records
Professional experience drafting, reviewing or revising law, legal policy, or administrative rules
Professional experience preparing for and providing representation in litigation matters and/or administrative hearings
Nice to have:
Professional experience providing legal representation in the areas of governmental operations, administration, or transportation
Professional experience administering or applying transportation policies and programs
Professional experience preparing and defending claims including experience with highway construction standards and specifications
