Job Description
Birkbeck, University of London, has an opportunity for an Associate Tutor in Political Communication to join the teaching team and support its School of Social Sciences this coming Autumn term 2026. We are seeking an Associate Tutor to teach on the following module: Political Communication: Media, Campaigns, and Citizens. Thursdays, 6-9pm 8 October - 17 December plus any prep time and marking time, flexibly. This post offers a chance to develop your teaching while drawing on a broad-based knowledge of politics, including British and comparative politics, elections, media and campaigns. Many of our students are working Londoners already active in relevant professions such as journalism, politics, public relations and professional communications, which makes for engaged, experienced seminar groups. You will support seminar teaching: facilitating group work and breakout presentations, and moderating discussions to keep students engaged throughout the session. You will also support our hyflex delivery, helping to involve students who join online so they take a full part in the session alongside those in the room. You will assist with assessment, marking and moderation across a range of tasks (critical reviews, research proposals and oral presentations). This is a development post, ideally suited to a PhD researcher or someone at an early career stage. Essential criteria: You will have demonstrable knowledge of politics and political communication. Desirable: Demonstrable experience of teaching at higher education level and of marking student work. Remuneration: Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College, starting rate £61.39 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay, for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 6 and is inclusive of a 'Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier' at 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course. Contract: Fixed-term, part-time contract teaching.
