Job Description:

We have an excellent opportunity for an Associate Lecturer to teach this Autumn term 2026. Birkbeck, University of London, is looking to recruit an Associate Lecturer on a part-time, fixed term basis. Joining the School of Historical Studies, you would teach on the following undergraduate archaeology module: The Archaeology of the Roman Empire. Teaching 30 hours in total. Tuesday 6-9pm, October to December 2026.

Job Responsibility:

  • Deliver teaching to Birkbeck students to enable them to complete their studies successfully
  • Undertake all related course administrative duties as required, including supervising selection of essay topic and marking presentations and essays

Requirements:

  • Good knowledge of the archaeology of the Roman empire (including provincial contexts, material culture, architecture, settlements, and landscapes)
  • Good knowledge of historiographical and theoretical debates in the study of Roman archaeology
  • Have completed or be near completion of a PhD
  • Some experience teaching a diverse group of students at undergraduate level
  • A PhD (or equivalent) in an appropriate specialism or be near completion
  • Teaching experience at undergraduate level
  • A good developing track record of research in the field
  • A good understanding of different teaching and learning methods
  • experience in working with students from a range of backgrounds
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Good administrative skills
