We are looking for an Associate General Counsel to provide legal guidance for a commercial real estate portfolio in Columbus, Ohio. This position partners closely with leasing, property management, construction, accounting, and asset management leaders to address day-to-day legal issues and support business decisions. The role is well suited for an attorney who combines strong real estate judgment with a practical, collaborative approach and is comfortable handling disputes, contracts, and operational risk in a fast-paced in-house setting.
Job Responsibility:
Advise internal stakeholders on legal matters affecting commercial real estate operations, with a focus on practical risk assessment and business-oriented solutions
Analyze, interpret, and enforce retail and commercial lease provisions, including issues related to occupancy, obligations, remedies, and cost recovery
Manage landlord-tenant conflicts from initial assessment through resolution, including eviction-related matters, rent recovery, and settlement strategy
Oversee matters involving tenant insolvency or bankruptcy, coordinating legal strategy and protecting the company’s interests throughout the process
Direct and supervise external litigation counsel, monitor case progress, and evaluate outcomes, budgets, and legal strategy
Negotiate and document resolutions for disputes involving tenants, vendors, and other third parties while minimizing financial and operational exposure
Review, draft, and negotiate contracts tied to vendors, construction activity, and other real estate-related services
Provide legal support to cross-functional teams on property management, asset performance, and transactional matters as business needs arise
Requirements:
At least 4 years of legal experience, with substantial exposure to commercial real estate matters
Demonstrated ability to review and interpret commercial lease agreements, including retail leasing documents
Experience handling disputes related to landlord-tenant issues, collections, insolvency proceedings, or real estate litigation
Strong background in contract drafting, negotiation, and legal analysis for commercial arrangements
Ability to collaborate effectively with business teams and provide clear, actionable legal guidance
Experience managing outside counsel and coordinating litigation or dispute-related work
Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills in a business-facing legal environment
