Within the Shopify Legal Team, Regulatory Legal works closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that Shopify keeps making commerce better and safer for everyone. The team is responsible for engaging, proactively and reactively, with regulatory and law enforcement entities worldwide, including first- and third-party government litigation. They help to set internal and external facing policies so everyone knows the rules of the road and abides by them. The team works internally to develop and deploy strategies to help Shopify’s business achieve its ambitious goals within existing (and future) platform, privacy, and related regulatory frameworks.
Job Responsibility:
Handling regulatory inquiries and investigations
Represent Shopify before regulators
Provide legal counsel to Shopify on regulatory and privacy issues and related matters including government litigation
Requirements:
A J.D. or LL.B., with a license to practice in the United States and/or Canada
Significant experience practicing law in government, in house, and/or at a law firm
Experience counseling clients on legal risks, ideally regulatory risks
Experience with regulatory matters, including interactions with government regulatory agencies
Top-notch oral and written communication skills
Exceptional business judgment, relationship-building skills, and experience thinking outside the box to identify creative solutions
Keen interest in creative legal problem solving, including researching novel and ambiguous areas of law
Nice to have:
Experience with analyzing statutory and regulatory requirements directed at platforms such as the Digital Services Act, Digital Markets Act, FTC Act, US INFORM Consumers Act, and UDAP/consumer protection laws
Experience with AI, privacy, and cybersecurity laws applicable to Internet platforms
