Job Description

The Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (MAE) within the Batten College of Engineering and Technology (BCET) at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in mechanical and aerospace engineering, starting Fall 2026. This is an annual 10-month appointment. We seek candidates with expertise in high-speed flow, aerothermodynamics modeling, gas-surface thermochemical interactions, propulsion, and plasma physics related to hypersonic flight. We also welcome applicants with relevant aerospace engineering backgrounds that will complement and enhance our department’s existing strengths. Ideal candidates will be capable of teaching in these specialized areas and more, while actively contributing to our research and service missions.

  • Provide quality instruction at both undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Mentor students in research
  • Participate in departmental, college, university, and professional activities

Requirements

  • Earned Ph.D. in Aerospace engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field by May 2026
  • Must be able to develop and teach both graduate and undergraduate courses in mechanical and aerospace engineering
  • Have plans for acquiring and sustaining sponsored research

Nice to have

  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in research and scholarly publications
  • Have experience of conducting sponsored research
  • Have experience in teaching
  • Have plans for developing interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research collaborations to advance the aerospace engineering program in the department
