The Assistant Manager in the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) provides daily leadership and operational oversight for evening and off-shift teams that support surgical and procedural services across Strong Memorial Hospital. This position partners closely with SPD leadership, Nursing, and Perioperative Services to ensure excellence in reprocessing, quality, safety, and workflow efficiency. Job Responsibility:
Lead & Support the Team: Supervise daily operations for assigned shifts, ensuring that all instrument reprocessing and sterilization activities meet hospital and regulatory standards
Drive Quality & Safety: Monitor performance metrics, investigate incidents, and implement corrective and preventive actions that strengthen safety and reliability
Foster Collaboration: Serve as a key link between SPD, surgical teams, and support departments to ensure timely service and excellent communication
Empower Staff: Participate in hiring, training, evaluations, and mentorship to support career development and employee engagement
Optimize Operations: Oversee case cart and instrument usage, manage inventory control systems, and identify opportunities for set optimization and process improvement
Ensure Compliance: Uphold Joint Commission, DOH, AAMI, and AORN standards while promoting a culture of accountability and continuous learning
Lead Change: Support departmental initiatives and system-wide projects that advance SPD excellence, efficiency, and innovation
Participates in the formulation of department policies and procedures
Coordinates the planning, implementation and reporting of quality improvement processes for the department
Investigates and takes appropriate action when employee accidents occur and takes preventive action to prevent further occurrences
Participates in the handling of human resources and employee related matters such as interviewing, hiring, disciplinary process, promotions and terminations
Maintains delivery of services congruent to standards of practice, policies and procedures to achieve compliance with regulatory agencies
Participates in the department budgeting process
Evaluates the quality and effectiveness of the Central Sterile Processing Department personnel and materials
Reviews and analyzes trends of case cart usage
Fosters a professional, productive and effective relationship other departments through open communication and constructive feedback
Collaborates with support services to create an environmental optimal for the delivery of services
Assists, initiates, and participates in committee activity
Ensures ongoing communication with the leadership of Peri-Operative Services
Provides general supervision to ensure effective operation of Central Sterile Processing Department
Establishes and maintains a record system for inventory and control of supplies and equipment
Participates in the recruitment and retention program of Central Sterile Processing Department
Participates in performance improvement activities. Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information
Observes the Health Care System's compliance policies
Reviews the utilization of staff and distributes responsibilities to maximize performance and productivity
Recommends and justifies need for new items for surgical use
Manages staff appropriately through transitions for optimal implementation of change
Reviews clinical performance of personnel via anecdotal records, conferences and evaluation process
Serves as a resource person for staff within the Central Sterile Processing Department
Determines equipment and supply par levels
Upholds safe environment by monitoring cleanliness, potential hazards and electrical safety within the Central Sterile Processing Department
Oversees various department projects
Works collaboratively with other departments for the improvement of service in the department of Central Sterile Processing
Participates in the development of other staff members
Identifies learning strengths and needs of direct reports
Keeps employees informed of new items, purpose, function and responsibility for care

Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree required (preferably in Business, Healthcare Administration, or a related field)
Minimum of 3 years in sterile processing, perioperative services, or healthcare operations leadership (or an equivalent combination of education and experience)
IAHCSMM (CRCST) or CBSPD certification required
supervisory or management certification preferred
Strong understanding of surgical instrumentation, sterilization principles, and infection prevention standards
Experience with instrument tracking systems and supply chain operations
Excellent communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and comfort working with data and performance metrics
Knowledge of specific health care products, patient care equipment and basic use
Comprehensive knowledge in inventory control, supply distribution, receiving, reprocessing techniques and principles, production management and regulating agencies standards
Comprehensive knowledge and experience in surgical instrumentation, microbiology as it relates to SPD and OR, cleaning procedures, disinfection, sterilization, and the care, handling, disassembly and assembly of hospital equipment and surgical instruments
Knowledge of medical terminology, including surgical procedures, human anatomy and of current and developing trends in area of professional expertise
Working knowledge of computer technology and software programs including work processing spreadsheets, and power point applications
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Knowledge in Instrument Tracking Systems
