The Assistant Manager for Operations & Maintenance supports the leadership, supervision, and daily operational oversight of a large-scale Facilities Services organization responsible for maintaining complex institutional facilities and infrastructure. This role assists in managing maintenance operations, infrastructure reliability, and operational readiness across a diverse portfolio of buildings and critical systems. The position supports oversight of electrical, mechanical, HVAC, custodial, grounds, utilities, and construction-related services to ensure safe, compliant, and cost-effective stewardship of physical assets. The Assistant Manager collaborates with internal departments, external stakeholders, contractors, and service providers to maintain facility performance while minimizing operational disruptions. This role provides operational leadership to first-line supervisors and union trades personnel supporting continuous, 24/7 facility operations.
Job Responsibility:
Support the Operations & Maintenance Manager in directing daily maintenance and infrastructure operations
Assist in supervising first-line supervisors and union trades personnel supporting continuous operations
Coordinate maintenance, repair, and operational activities across electrical, HVAC, plumbing, custodial, grounds, utilities, and small construction services
Oversee contractor performance and service agreements including custodial services, landscaping, waste and recycling removal, snow removal, parking areas, and roadway maintenance
Collaborate with internal departments, engineering teams, and external contractors to coordinate facility work activities and minimize operational impacts
Support union labor relations activities including contract administration and workforce coordination
Provide input on supervisory and union personnel performance evaluations, training, and workforce development initiatives
Assist in planning work priorities, scheduling, staffing, and operational resource allocation
Support budget management through monitoring labor utilization, contractor services, and operational expenditures
Promote compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations as well as organizational policies and safety standards
Maintain effective communication and coordination across operational departments to support continuity of services and facility reliability
Respond to operational issues, outages, and emergency situations as required
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field with five (5) or more years of relevant experience
Experience supporting facilities operations within complex institutional, industrial, research, healthcare, higher education, or government environments preferred
Working knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements including ADA compliance and commercial building codes
Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and coordinate complex facilities operations
Experience with facilities management and building automation systems such as SAP CMMS, Automated Logic, Continuum, or similar platforms
Experience supervising union personnel preferred
Strong planning, organizational, financial awareness, and leadership skills
Ability to lead diverse operational teams and resolve complex operational challenges effectively
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across multiple organizational levels
