Job Description

Fixed term contract opportunities for Assistant Ecologists to support our terrestrial ecology teams for the 2024 survey season (March – October). A great opportunity to learn professional survey and mitigation techniques and gain experience in a consultancy. Many previous seasonal Assistant Ecologists have gone on to secure permanent positions.

Job Responsibility

  • Learn professional survey and mitigation techniques, in a range of species and habitats
  • Gain experience of working in a busy independent environmental consultancy
  • Support our terrestrial ecology teams

Requirements

  • Have a degree in ecology or a related field, or suitable relevant experience
  • Be living in the UK with the right to work
  • Have a valid driving licence and vehicle, that can be insured for business use
  • Able to start full time until October 2024
  • You will be located within 1 hour’s commute from one of our offices (Birmingham, Manchester, Cardiff, East Anglia, Guildford, and Leeds) or be willing to relocate immediately
  • Have the ability and willingness to travel and stay away at survey sites in various locations around the UK
  • Have confidence to work independently, and as part of a team
  • Be self-motivated with the ability to learn quickly

Nice to have

  • Previous experience undertaking ecological surveys in the UK
  • A protected species licence e.g. GCN, bat or dormouse
  • Membership to the Chartered Institute of Ecological and Environmental Management (CIEEM)
  • A Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Card
  • First Aid at Work certification

  • Some experience of ecological fieldwork, gained through consultancy, seasonal roles, research projects, or volunteer work
  • A basic understanding of UK wildlife legislation, policy and planning, with an interest in developing this further (experience in the Scottish context is an advantage but not essential)

  • Assist in planning and undertaking ecological field surveys, including Phase 1 / UKHab habitat surveys and protected species surveys under the supervision of senior ecologists
  • Help to collate and analyse desk study data, prepare baseline plans and maintain accurate field records
  • Contribute to the preparation of ecological reports, including survey reports, PEAs and inputs to Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs)
  • Support the design and delivery of practical mitigation and habitat enhancement measures on development and infrastructure projects
  • Help with day‑to‑day project tasks such as preparing risk assessments, organising survey logistics and liaising with site contacts
