Under the direction of the Canton Parks and Recreation Assistant Director and the Pequitside Day Camp Director, the Assistant Director works to further the mission of the Pequitside Summer Program through the development, management and delivery of activities and events. The Assistant Director designs and delivers program activities that are safe, fun and appropriate to the campers’ ages and abilities. The Assistant Director assists in managing the day-to-day camp operations; supervises and evaluates Pequitside Day Camp Staff; and supports and motivates staff in providing energy and enthusiasm while facilitating activities, singing songs and executing the camp experience. This position is a key contributor to the organization, preparation and extensive planning of camp day-to-day and week-to-week offerings for campers.
Job Responsibility:
Supervise and evaluate counselors in the development and implementation of all facets of camp activities
Develop and manage staff schedules
Monitor work of counselors
provide daily feedback and guidance
Oversee transition of campers to and from activities
Act as a role model to participants and staff
Assist program director in any staff and camp daily scheduling
Deliver a fun, innovative and enthusiastic program for campers
Ensure activities are planned and implemented to meet the campers’ abilities and camp outcomes
Assess the development of the campers’ abilities and skills in camp activities and adjust as needed
Demonstrate good sportsmanship and a level head at all times
Evaluate camp program and individual activities
Research and develop new fun and exciting camp-wide activities
Take photos throughout the day to be posted to social media for family engagement
Assist in the planning and implementation of staff training
Maintain up to date records and forms for staff and participants
Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety procedures at all times
Oversee daily checks of areas and equipment for safety and cleanliness
Assist in the management and care of the facilities and equipment
Provide guidelines to staff and campers for specific programs as required
Ensure that all equipment is properly stored at the end of each day
Represent the Department when interacting with participants, parents and community members
Act as the head of the Pequitside Day Camp Social Media site
Responsible for daily posts and stories to keep families and caretakers in the loop
Responsible for communicating any changes at camp via social media
Observe participant behavior and enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures as needed
Report concerns and incidents to the Director of Pequitside Day Camp in a timely manner and according to departmental protocols
Provide parents appropriate and timely feedback and information as needed
Maintain consistent written and verbal communication with all camp staff
Follow and support the policies, procedures and expectations of the department and the Town of Canton
Requirements:
At least 21 years of age and have attained a minimum of an associate's degree or comparable level of education
Minimum of 2 year of experience as a camp counselor or comparable recreation experience
Prior to start date, must successfully complete the NRPA and Canton Board of Health approved Camp Administration Course
Valid Massachusetts driver’s license and ability to operate an automobile required
CPR/AED and First Aid certification required
Must successfully complete CORI and SORI background checks
Understanding of youth development
Ability to lead large groups in step by step instructions
Ability to manage large groups in a dynamic environment
Ability to respond appropriately to emergency situations
Ability to communicate and provide necessary instruction to camp staff
Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, and apply appropriate behavior-intervention techniques
Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail
Knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel and PowerPoint
