The Assistant Director of Engineering supports the Director of Engineering in all aspects of managing the resort’s physical assets, technical operations, and engineering team. This role ensures the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of all building systems while maintaining the highest standards of guest satisfaction, operational excellence, and asset protection. The Assistant Director plays a key leadership role in preventative maintenance, energy management, capital planning, and contractor oversight.
Job Responsibility:
Assist in managing departmental budgets, capital expenditures, preventive maintenance strategies, and project execution
Oversee the maintenance and upkeep of all buildings, guest areas, employee facilities, and grounds, ensuring safety, security, and asset protection at all times
Supervise the daily operations of the Engineering Department, ensuring timely completion and quality control of all tasks
Manage the physical plant, including HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, electrical, water treatment, industrial kitchen equipment, mechanical systems, and Fire & life safety systems
Review, assign, track, and follow up on work orders for staff and external contractors through the hotel CMMS (Transcendent)
Support the planning, scheduling, and execution of comprehensive preventative maintenance programs for all property systems and equipment
Help prioritize maintenance needs across the resort to align with operational demands and long-term asset management strategies
Ensure compliance with fire & life safety systems, emergency procedures, and regulatory maintenance requirements
Monitor energy consumption and conduct detailed trend analyses to identify efficiency opportunities
Assist in developing long-term energy management strategies alongside the Director of Engineering and third‑party consultants
Support and execute all energy-related capital projects and sustainability initiatives across the property
Lead, motivate, and mentor engineering team members, fostering a collaborative, efficient, and safety‑focused work environment
Drive guest and employee satisfaction through effective communication, training, and professional development
Promote positive working relationships across departments, ensuring seamless service delivery and operational support
Requirements:
Engineering degree or equivalent technical qualifications
Proven experience in an engineering or maintenance leadership role within a luxury hospitality environment
Technical training and hands‑on experience in HVAC‑R, electrical, and plumbing systems
Strong knowledge of building services, mechanical systems, industrial kitchen equipment, landscaping, and general resort engineering operations
Proficiency with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), preferably Transcendent
Experience with Building Management Systems (BMS)
Johnson Controls system experience preferred
Excellent communication skills—both verbal and written—with strong reading comprehension
Strong mathematical reasoning and ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings
Deep knowledge of fire and life safety systems, hazardous materials, and chemical handling
Experience in equipment maintenance planning and selection for hotel or resort environments
Prior experience in a 5‑star luxury resort is required
island resort experience preferred
Demonstrated ability to inspire, lead, and develop teams
Nice to have:
Professional certifications such as LEED, CFM, or AEP
Experience contributing to capital planning and large-scale project management
Experience using AI tools for energy modeling, asset lifecycle planning, or automated reporting
