The Assistant Director of Engineering supports the Director of Engineering in overseeing the operation, maintenance, and sustainability of all hotel facilities, ensuring optimal performance, safety, regulatory compliance, and exceptional guest experience. This role is responsible for the efficient management of engineering operations across a large, complex luxury property comprising heritage and modern structures, multiple event venues, food & beverage outlets, and guest facilities. The position ensures compliance with Singapore regulatory requirements while driving asset protection, energy efficiency, and continuous improvement aligned with JW Marriott brand standards.
Job Responsibility:
Oversee daily engineering operations, ensuring all building systems operate efficiently and safely, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, lifts, and life safety systems
Manage and monitor the preventive maintenance programme to minimise downtime and extend asset lifecycle
Ensure proper maintenance of guest rooms, public areas, event spaces, back-of-house facilities, and outdoor areas
Supervise and prioritise work orders, ensuring timely and quality completion
Act as the engineering lead in the absence of the Director of Engineering
Ensure full compliance with all local regulations and standards
Maintain all statutory certifications, inspections, and records
Ensure fire life safety systems, emergency systems, and evacuation procedures are regularly tested and compliant
Promote a strong safety culture and enforce proper use of PPE and safe work practices
Assist in preparing and managing the engineering operating budget and capital expenditure (CAPEX) plans
Control costs through efficient resource allocation and preventive maintenance strategies
Participate in lifecycle planning for major equipment replacement and upgrades
Manage inventory, spare parts, and procurement processes effectively
Support planning and execution of refurbishment, renovation, and capital improvement projects
Coordinate and supervise contractors, consultants, and service providers to ensure compliance with specifications and timelines
Evaluate vendor performance and maintain effective supplier relationships
Introduce innovative solutions and technologies to improve operational efficiency and guest experience
Drive energy conservation and sustainability initiatives in line with Marriott ESG goals and BCA Green Mark standards
Monitor and optimise energy and water consumption across the property
Support implementation of smart building technologies and predictive maintenance systems where applicable
Ensure all engineering services enhance the luxury guest experience with minimal disruption
Respond promptly to guest feedback and operational issues related to engineering
Collaborate with Rooms, F&B, and Events teams to support high-profile functions and large-scale events
Maintain high standards of presentation and functionality across all guest-facing areas
Lead, coach, and develop the Engineering team to achieve operational excellence
Plan manpower deployment, work schedules, and training programs
Ensure team members are trained in safety procedures, emergency response, and technical skills
Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement
Requirements:
Diploma or Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, or related field)
Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in hotel engineering or facilities management, with management & supervisory experience
Experience in luxury or large-scale hotel operations preferred
Strong knowledge of building systems: HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and automation systems
Familiarity with Singapore regulatory requirements and compliance standards
Experience with preventive maintenance systems and engineering management tools
