Citadel Source are delighted to be partnering with an award-winning SME construction business in Somerset, currently looking to appoint an Assistant Accountant to support both the finance and commercial operations teams. This is a broad and varied opportunity sitting between transactional finance and commercial project support, offering strong exposure across the business and the chance to play a key role in supporting operational efficiency and project delivery. About you You are someone with a strong accounting foundation who also enjoys the commercial side of a business. You’re comfortable working across multiple teams, supporting operational processes, and getting involved wherever needed within a fast-paced SME environment. Job Responsibility
Supporting purchase order management and financial administration
Processing supplier and subcontractor invoices accurately and efficiently
Supporting day-to-day bookkeeping and transactional finance activities
Assisting with project monitoring including project costs, valuations, and payments
Supporting commercial teams with financial and operational administration
Tracking project variations and identifying opportunities for efficiencies or savings
Supporting final accounts and post-project financial analysis
Helping manage project documentation and commercial reporting
Supporting both finance and operational teams with reporting and administration
Running reports and supporting data analysis where required
Assisting with process improvement initiatives across finance and operations
Supporting future automation and AI-led process improvements across the business
Requirements
Previous experience within an Assistant Accountant, Accounts Assistant, or similar finance role
General bookkeeping knowledge (AAT Level 3 or qualified by experience advantageous)
Strong Excel skills, ideally including pivot tables
Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
Ability to work collaboratively across finance and operational teams
A proactive and flexible approach within a growing SME environment
Construction or project-led business exposure highly desirable
Commercial awareness and confidence supporting operational stakeholders
Nice to have
General bookkeeping knowledge (AAT Level 3 or qualified by experience advantageous)
