The ASL Student Communication Facilitator provides dedicated one-on-one support to a Deaf or Hard of Hearing student in classroom and school settings. The primary purpose of this role is to support the student's ongoing acquisition, fluency, understanding, and use of American Sign Language (ASL) while ensuring meaningful access to learning, communication, and participation throughout the school day. The Facilitator works directly with one assigned student to support classroom learning, communication with peers and staff, social interaction, and language development through ASL interpretation, modelling, and individualized support strategies. This role works collaboratively with the Language Acquisition Support Worker, Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Teacher, classroom teachers, Inclusive Learning staff, and families to support consistent language development, educational programming, and communication access for the student.
Job Responsibility
Provide direct one-on-one support to an assigned Deaf or Hard of Hearing student throughout the instructional day
Support the student in accessing classroom instruction, routines, discussions, and social interactions
Build a trusting and supportive relationship that encourages communication, confidence, engagement, and independence
Support the student's participation in classroom, school, cultural, and extracurricular activities
Reinforce and model developmentally appropriate ASL throughout daily interactions
Support the student in developing receptive and expressive ASL skills
Assist the student in building ASL vocabulary, conversational skills, comprehension, and academic language
Encourage language use in both structured learning and natural social settings
Reinforce communication goals and strategies identified by the educational team
Provide ASL interpretation and communication support during classroom instruction and school activities
Facilitate communication between the student, peers, teachers, and staff
Assist in clarifying classroom concepts, discussions, and directions using accessible communication strategies
Support peer interactions and inclusive communication opportunities within the classroom environment
Collaborate closely with the Language Acquisition Support Worker, DHH Teacher, classroom teachers, Educational Assistants, and Inclusive Learning staff
Participate in meetings related to student programming, communication supports, and individualized planning
Implement strategies and recommendations developed by the DHH Teacher and Language Acquisition Support Worker
Share observations regarding student communication, engagement, progress, and support needs with the educational team
Assist in preparing visual, communication, and language-learning supports as directed
Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions
Participate in ongoing professional learning related to Deaf education, ASL development, communication facilitation, and inclusive practices
Support a respectful, inclusive, and communication-accessible learning environment
Follow school and division procedures, safety protocols, and student support plans
Requirements
Level 3 Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
Level 4 Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) is an asset
Education Assistant Diploma or post-secondary education in a related field is an asset
ASLPI, RID, NAD, or comparable ASL/interpreting certification is an asset
Experience working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing children or youth
Understanding of Deaf culture and language acquisition
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to work collaboratively as part of an educational support team
Experience supporting students in school-based settings
Familiarity with inclusive education practices and communication supports
Nice to have
