Job Description:

The Anatomic Pathology Supervisor has the overall responsibility for the planning, coordination, evaluation, and supervision of all technical and/or operational activities and personnel in the Anatomic Pathology department. The Anatomic Pathology Supervisor is responsible for performing duties to meet quality assurance, safety and accreditation requirements in the laboratory. The Anatomic Pathology Supervisor also oversees a variety of projects that can be delegated by the Director of Laboratory Operations or Medical Laboratory Director.

Job Responsibility:

  • Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Anatomic Pathology laboratory and supervision of the technical and support staff
  • Initiates and monitors quality control and quality assurance programs for the laboratory
  • Sets standards, policies, and guidelines for the efficient management of the Anatomic Pathology laboratory
  • Ensures that the Anatomic Pathology laboratory staff is trained and compliant with Standard Operating Procedures and competency checklists
  • Oversees, plans, and prepares for inspections
  • Ensures departmental Standard Operating Procedures accurately reflects the current process
  • Sets department objectives and performance goals
  • Drives personnel management activities for the department
  • Conducts performance appraisals, documenting deficiencies, developing plans for improvement and counsels employees
  • Monitors laboratory work performance to determine staff resources utilization
  • Ensures that a safe working environment is maintained and that safe work practices are employed
  • Maintains advanced knowledge of general and specialty requirements within CAP/CLIA/NYS institutions
  • Accountable for the operation of a 24 hour function, including responding to emergencies, and attendance at meetings outside of working hours as needed

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences with the addition of the successful completion of a course of at least 1 year experience/training/training course in assigned specialty
  • Master of Arts or Master of Science Degree from an accredited institution with a major in one the chemical, physical, or biological sciences, and subsequent to graduation, has had at least four years of pertinent laboratory experience of which not less than two years have been spent working in a clinical laboratory having a director at the doctoral level
  • 6+ years (in high complexity testing) is preferred in histology laboratory
  • Experience as a HTL III or Lead Histotechnologist is preferred
  • Nationally: HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) certification
  • FL: Current state supervisor level license and state technologist license to perform laboratory testing required

Nice to have:

  • 6+ years (in high complexity testing) is preferred in histology laboratory
  • Experience as a HTL III or Lead Histotechnologist is preferred

  • Assures the smooth operation of all gross room function, all Anatomic Pathology is cleaned, disinfected and maintained according to CAP and OSHA standards.
  • Ensures that in-house specimen deliveries are received and noted on schedule. Ensures that incoming slides by couriers are promptly distributed to pathologists.
  • Orders supplies according to standard operating procedures. Monitors supply usage. Ensures adequate levels of supplies and timely placement of orders. Works with supply chain management to resolve any quality issues.
  • Oversees filing and storage of specimen blocks and slides
  • Performs, teaches and assures filing and documentation procedures are followed for specimen blocks and slides
  • Assures accurate record-keeping and filing of all specimens and slides. Organizes and appropriately stores specimens from other sites. Maintains necessary records and disposes specimens in accordance with CAP regulations.
  • Ensures accuracy of tissue part type and that work is completed is a safe and efficient manner. Ensures that specimens in cassettes are sent to IL Central Lab (ICL) and slide specimens are received by courier from ICL and all documentation complete and accurate.
  • Assures accurate and timely retrieval of slides for patients, conferences and send-outs. Assures accurate and detailed chain of custody documentation.
  • Documents problems and takes corrective action relating to specimens, equipment or complaints. Reports unresolved or unusual situations or problems to the supervisor. Utilizes principles of Continuous Quality Improvement.
  • Under the direction of the laboratory supervisor, coordinates work assignments in autopsy, FNA, gross room, filing slide distribution and billing. Communicates and escalates concerns that occur during the scheduled shift to supervisor for appropriate resolution.
