Job Description

MSF’s anaesthetists play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and effective delivery of anaesthesia during surgical procedures in challenging environments. They often work in conflict settings to provide care to communities that do not have access to functioning healthcare systems. Surgical cases (children and adults) include general, trauma, obstetrics, orthopaedic, burns, and reconstruction. The role of an MSF anaesthetist is incredibly varied; in the course of a day, you might find yourself training local staff in a refugee camp hospital or managing anaesthesia for complex obstetric surgeries. Our maternity units and surgical projects deliver high-quality care, with internationally standardised protocols, hygiene procedures, technical platforms, and medical products.

Job Responsibility

  • Conduct pre-operative consultations to assess surgical risks and determine appropriate anaesthesia
  • Administer and monitor anaesthesia during surgical procedures, ensuring patient safety
  • Prepare drugs, materials, and equipment required for anaesthesia
  • Oversee patient transfer to the recovery room and ensure full recovery of consciousness
  • Advise on postoperative care, including pain management and monitoring vital signs
  • Implement and supervise hygiene protocols in operating theatres and recovery rooms
  • Supervise the operation theatre pharmacy and ensure adequate stock of medications
  • Maintain and ensure the proper functioning of operating theatre equipment
  • Organise tasks and supervise personnel under their responsibility
  • Collaborate with other departments and participate in emergency activities
  • Fulfil administrative procedures and documentation, including patient files and reporting

Requirements

  • Doctor anaesthetist diploma recognised by the state
  • Two years of experience as an anaesthetist
  • Experience working in MSF or other NGOs and in low- and middle-income countries
  • Proficiency in programme language, with knowledge of local language desirable

Nice to have

  • Previous experience in people management
  • Commitment to humanitarian work
  • Flexibility in adapting to different situations
  • Strong results orientation
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
