Job Description

An exciting opportunity has become available for an experienced Vehicle Technician to join our well established team at our Coventry Workshop. The role of the Ambulance Vehicle Engineer is to ensure all Trust vehicles (Petrol/Diesel/Hybrid and EV) both owned and leased, are serviced, repaired, and maintained to trusts procedures and industry standards. The post incorporates the skilled service and repair of specialist ambulance equipment.

Job Responsibility

  • To provide high standard vehicle servicing and repairs to vehicles, specialist ambulance equipment, both owned & leased, operated by the Trust
  • Plan and prioritise daily workloads, to ensure maximum vehicle availability
  • Carry out scheduled and unplanned maintenance
  • Communicate the necessary required parts for completion of a cost effective and prompt repair
  • Accept delivery of any parts and sign for invoices and delivery
  • Regularly update and complete all necessary documentation relating to each job carried out
  • Effective communication to maintain professional, effective working relationships with colleagues, all trust staff and external agencies
  • Maintain a high level of communication with warranty companies, externally contracted garages and body shops
  • Responsible for maintaining compliance of safe working practices within the workshop environment
  • Diagnose and assess a range of different vehicles with varying degrees of complexity due to design
  • Use professional knowledge and judgement to fault diagnose and recommend the most appropriate outcome
  • Undertake bespoke fabrication work to specialist vehicles, parts and equipment that is no longer available
  • Service and repair of internal coachwork
  • Service and repair of specialist ambulance equipment
  • Undertake the fitting and inspection of tyres in line with the Trusts Policy
  • Where instructed, undertake appropriate commission or decommission of vehicles for operational use
  • Arrange appointments and pre-inspect vehicles for DVSA testing
  • Travel to and work from workshops within the WMAS area, for relief/cover, as & when required
  • Attend the scene of vehicle breakdowns to undertake repairs and enable the return of vehicles to workshops
  • Take responsibility for the allocated repair of vehicles to a recognised technical standard and approve their roadworthy condition
  • Provide training and mentorship to Fleet Apprentices in all aspects of practical and technical competencies
  • Be flexible within working hours, covering weekend working

Requirements

  • Fully recognised apprenticeship e.g. Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair or equivalent experience
  • NVQ level 3 or City and Guilds level 3
  • Post qualification training and knowledge to include: Electrical Systems / Suspension Units / Service Vehicle Ancillary Equipment / Diagnostic Equipment / Manufacturer Specific Vehicle Training / Vehicle Bodybuilder
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety at work/ COSHH/ I,P&C
  • Ability to work unsupervised
  • To have comprehensive knowledge of vehicle electrical systems including modern vehicle electronic management, and of computer based workshop diagnostic equipment
  • Certified training on hybrid and fully electric vehicles
  • Ability to work under pressure to time critical deadlines
  • Full UK Driving Licence plus full or provisional category C1 entitlement at point of application (must be willing to obtain full C1 entitlement within 6 months of employment)
  • Experience in a motor vehicle repair and servicing role (equivalent to a minimum of 4 years including apprenticeship period)
  • Experience of working on a range of vehicles to include specialised fleet
  • Automotive electrics

  • Travel to ambulance builders, vehicle outfitters and other customer sites to install control panels in a wide range of vehicles and equipment, following company and manufacturer guidelines
  • Carry out advanced 12‑volt electrical work, including power and ignition connections, relays, fusing, harness routing and integration with OEM and specialist systems
  • Use appropriate hand and power tools safely and correctly, ensuring tidy and secure installations suitable for emergency and specialist vehicles
  • Configure and test installed systems to confirm correct operation and connectivity
  • Verify GPS/telematics functions, inputs/outputs and communication with back‑office platforms, resolving issues where possible on‑site
  • Escalate complex technical issues to senior technical support where required, providing clear information on findings
  • Diagnose and resolve faults in 12‑volt vehicle electrical systems related to installations, including wiring faults, poor grounds, blown fuses and parasitic drains
  • Perform routine maintenance, upgrades and removal/re‑installation of systems as required
  • Work largely unsupervised in the field, managing your own schedule and prioritising jobs effectively
  • Complete installation, service and stock usage reports accurately and on time using company systems
