Job Description:

Join the CSIRO team supporting the Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO), an international mega-science project that’s set to transform our understanding of the Universe. Based in Perth, you’ll work within the Assembly, Integration and Verification (AIV) team, contributing to the integration and testing of SKA-Low—being built on Wajarri Yamaji Country in remote Western Australia. As the AIV System Scientist (Integration and Verification), you’ll lead the development of system-level integration and verification plans and provide technical guidance across the team. Your work will ensure that all telescope components come together seamlessly. This role offers the opportunity to collaborate globally, travel occasionally, and be part of one of the most significant science infrastructure projects in the world. We’re seeking diverse, experienced talent to help us deliver this once-in-a-generation project.

Job Responsibility:

  • Lead the development and execution of the Systems AIV Plan, aligned with SKAO’s Integration & Verification (I&V) Strategy
  • Define and manage the Continuous Integration & Verification flow, including signal chain validation and use case development
  • Develop performance analysis tools (e.g. Python, CASAcore) and diagnose system-level issues across the SKA-Low Telescope and ITF (Integration Test Facility)
  • Represent AIV in product integration, supplier and internal training, system acceptance, and milestone reviews
  • Collaborate across global, multi-disciplinary teams using Lean Agile processes to plan, prioritise, and deliver project outcomes
  • Build strong stakeholder relationships and share best practices for telescope characterisation and performance evaluation

Requirements:

  • PhD in Radio Astronomy
  • Strong knowledge and practical experience in radio interferometry
  • Expertise in one or more SKA-relevant domains, such as: Correlation and beamforming
  • Electronic or software engineering
  • Digital signal processing
  • High-performance computing or network infrastructure
  • AAVS (Aperture Array Verification System)
  • Demonstrated experience in: Developing and managing integration and verification processes for complex radio astronomy systems
  • Leading or influencing teams in roadmap development and test planning
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in complex international and multicultural environments, with flexibility and adaptability to change

Nice to have:

  • Membership or eligibility for membership in a recognised national or international systems engineering body
  • Familiarity with modern collaboration tools (e.g. Confluence, Jira, Jama, Miro)
  • Understanding of Lean Agile methodologies, including SAFe
  • Knowledge of systems engineering and project management concepts and tools
  • Understanding of configuration management and engineering change control
  • Practical experience in quality assurance
What we offer:
  • up to 15.4% superannuation
  • Flexible working arrangements
  • Diversity and inclusion initiatives
