Job Description:

Zed is a next-generation code editor that's engineered from scratch in Rust to be fast, elegant, and collaborative. As we expand our AI capabilities, we're looking for engineers with deep, hands-on experience working with large language models to own and shape our AI experience. Your role will be to drive Zed's AI strategy through model evaluation, fine-tuning, and data collection. You'll work alongside our engineering team to bring AI features from concept to production, while elevating the team's understanding of language model capabilities and best practices. Your expertise will be crucial in determining how we can best leverage AI to enhance the coding experience. This role offers a unique opportunity to apply deep language model experience in a product focused on transforming how developers work. At Zed, you'll have the support of a team that excels at building world-class user interfaces for code, allowing you to push the boundaries of AI-assisted development.

Job Responsibility:

  • Own and shape the AI experience in Zed
  • Lead the evaluation, selection, and fine-tuning of language models for coding-specific tasks
  • Design and implement data collection strategies to improve model performance
  • Develop prompting strategies and evaluation frameworks
  • Create and maintain testing methodologies for AI features
  • Work closely with the engineering team to bring AI capabilities to production
  • Share AI expertise across the team through mentorship and knowledge sharing
  • Stay current with AI research and identify new opportunities for application
  • Participate in regular pair programming sessions and code reviews

Requirements:

  • Extensive hands-on experience working with large language models
  • Deep expertise in model evaluation, prompt engineering, and fine-tuning
  • Strong background in developing data collection and evaluation strategies
  • Experience implementing production-grade AI solutions
  • Experience with evaluation methodologies for AI systems
  • Strong communication skills and ability to mentor others in AI concepts
  • Passion for developer tools and improving the coding experience
  • Proficiency in Rust
  • Enthusiasm for pair programming and real-time collaboration

Nice to have:

  • Experience with code analysis or generation using AI
  • Background in developer tools
  • Familiarity with the Rust programming language
