Job Description:

Reporting to the Superintendent – Geotechnical, you’ll provide specialist technical expertise in backfill systems across Newmont Tanami’s underground operations. This role is critical to ensuring backfill systems are designed, operated and integrated safely and effectively into mine plans, while driving innovation, performance improvement and long-term backfill strategies. You’ll work closely with geotechnical, engineering and operational teams to optimise backfill delivery, enhance system reliability and support safe, efficient underground production. In addition, a rare opportunity has arisen to join the Tanami site-based team on an attractive 8 days on / 20 days off FIFO roster. Working closely with Newmont’s Geotechnical and Backfill teams, this role offers hands-on exposure to a large-scale, technically complex underground operation. This position is offered on a 6-month fixed-term contract, with strong potential for extension for the right candidate.

Job Responsibility:

  • Provide technical guidance for the design and implementation of backfill systems
  • Support and supervise backfill operations to ensure compliance with safety and quality standards
  • Analyse backfill performance data to identify optimisation opportunities
  • Collaborate with geotechnical, mining and engineering teams to integrate backfill into mine plans
  • Support operational teams with correct application and maintenance of backfill systems
  • Assess backfill materials and methods to improve performance and sustainability
  • Develop long-term backfill reticulation designs and strategies
  • Prepare technical reports on backfill performance and improvement opportunities
  • Identify and assess innovative backfill technologies for efficiency and cost effectiveness
  • Develop contingency plans to manage potential backfill failures
  • Facilitate workshops to share standard methodologies and lessons learned in backfill operations

Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience in underground mining backfill operations
  • Tertiary qualification in Mining, Geotechnical, Civil Engineering or similar
  • In-depth knowledge of backfill plants and delivery systems
  • Strong capability in reticulation design, pipeline pressures and control systems
  • High-level skills in backfill design, testing and performance analysis
  • Experience supporting plant operators and maintenance teams with fault finding and upgrades
  • Proficiency with modelling and design software relevant to the role
  • Strong communication, organisational and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and continuous improvement
  • Current Australian driver’s licence
  • Mask fit ready

Nice to have:

Experience with using Flac-3d, Pipesim, Deswick or similar

What we offer:
  • Industry-competitive remuneration package
  • Annual performance incentives
  • FIFO allowance
  • Health & Wellbeing Allowance
  • Access to employee benefits, career development and progression opportunities with a global organisation
